Called my mother's home, looking for me, looking for a relative

Strangest thing; My mother called me to inform me that a Bill Dorsey (sp) called her home and left a message for me and stated that I can "call them at 800-733-5322 or I can contact an attorney of my choice". WHAT? My mother knows full well that I've NEVER been in any sort of legal trouble at all so she wasn't truly that concerned, but she did let me know about it.

I did call the number back that evening and did get some 'generic' recording stating simply "Leave a message". I thought how very unprofessional if I'm needing to 'contact an attorney'! I did a little 'surfing' and found their actual office number on the Better Business Bureau;s website, of which there have been many complaints filed, so I called that number the next day and spoke with this Mr. Dorsey.

In reading their website, I did notice that they are a debt collector. Shoot... I've never been late on a bill a day in my life so I certainly wanted to clear this up!!! In speaking with Mr. Dorsey, he proceeds to tell me that it's not me he's looking for but maybe my husband?!?! HUH? I let Mr. Dorsey know I've not been married now for 13 years! He then asks, "Ok. Maybe it's a brother?" Grasping at straws on that one, I see! I was so totally disgusted with how they were going about doing their 'business', I denied even knowing who they were looking for because this is NOT my problem and I don't want to get involved. (Nor should I BE involved!)

When I confronted Mr. Dorsey about his company being debt collectors, he totally denied it. I asked 'where' he got his information on me and Mom and he even had acquaintances listed... And he stated that they have another party that gathers this information.in either case, if they're looking for someone that's NOT me... They shouldn't have called me... Well, or mom, in this case. He even rattled off a number and asked if those were the last 4-digits of my social security number??!! WHAT??? They weren't, but even so... Why would he think they'd be mine? Again, grasping.

This is how I see it; it seems whomever they get their information from found a name, fitting who they think they're looking for, that listed me, my mom and others as 'possible' relatives, friends, etc. Yes, you can find this stuff on the internet. (Although Mr. Dorsey said the person he was looking for put me down as a 'reference' or a point of contact. Huh?) Oh... I doubt that! (Now wait a minute... I thought he'd said the information came from a third party previously?!!? Yeah, I'm that gullible!)

My phone number is unlisted, as well as other 'supposed' relatives on his list, so the only number listed publicly is Mom, hence the call to her. But I still don't understand why he was looking for me at that number. I've not lived with my parents for 20 years!

I did ask Mr. Dorsey to be sure to remove my name and my mother's phone number from whatever list and to not call again as WE are not who he is looking for! I will say this though, that if who they were looking for was wanted for anything other than just not paying a bill on a rented instrument, I would have turned him in.

We'll see if Mr. Dorsey and company leave us alone. If they can't 'find' exactly who they're looking for, that's not my problem. I shouldn't have had to call them back, nor should my mother have been called in the first place. I would classify that as definitely a form of harassment on the part of Allen, Lewis and Assoc. I am going to file a complaint with the BBB as well as this should never have happened and I don't want to hear of it happening to another 'un-involved' party.
