Let me tell you a little story about these type of companies. This is my second scam artist to deal with in the last two years. (let me repeat myself, SCAM artist). My first time around, it was such a mess to clean up my credit with all the letters to write, and reports to dispute. But it can be done! This time I know how to go about handling it and not getting so irate dealing with these scam artists. Even though it can be trying at times, be patient and keep focused.
Like everyone else who is dealing with this 'so called' collection agency (Midland Credit Management, Inc.) I was mailed the same bogus letter. My letter claimed that I owned a non-existent credit card debt account from CITIBANK USA in the amount of $ 1,453.78. I could then pay $363.45 which was a substantial discount of 75% off the cover price. WOW, what a deal! And of course, pay it in the next 30 days.
Again, I have never had or owned this account! And yes, my lawyer will be involved with this one as well as the last.
NOW for the kicker, listen CLOSELY. Not only did they send me a bogus letter, they used a bogus name! I had my name changed LEGALLY seventeen years ago in a court of law. My old name has been used for no accounts (to my knowledge) in the last seventeen years.
Now they are trying to use this bogus name, on a bogus account for profit. I can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is not my account. They will not get a dime from me! And will LOSE just like the last company did that tried this little stunt. This has 'IDENTITY THEFT' written all over it. And I will take necessary actions.
PLEASE, keep your cool! I know this can be very trying on your patience, I know I was very irate and scared the first time I went through this. But, it can be achieved with the correct actions to take. Attorney Generals, BBB, lawyers, credit bureaus, FTC, and police reports are all entities that need to be addressed. I know that it may seem mind boggling, but this company will be caught and others like them!
Its sad that scam artists like MCM pray on weak or vulnerable people to make a few bucks.
