Ripoff for months hit me with an unannounced 30$ late fee first which kept my auto pay from bringing my credit line below my limit while enabling them to keep assessing more fees

I had a card with a 300$ limit that they kept hasseling me to open in the first place. I inadvertently went over the limit by a few dollars and was hit with a late charge of 30$ plus interest which my auto pay of 50$ would only bring it down to within 1$ of being within my limit so without me making a purchase the next month i was hit again and so on and so forth i just cant see how it is legal for a company to hit me up for more penalties and interest than what was borrowed to start with. I had a balance of 318$ two months ago when i closed the account and two bank drafts later totaling 100$ i have a balance of $301.29 which of course gets me another 30$ late fee and a$7.33 finance charge. Unbelievable.
