Overdraft Charges for unauthorized debits, ripoff

My daughter just moved to Pittsburgh as a student and PNC Bank was at student registration encouraging opening accounts with them. She opened 2 (chequing and savings)

She didn't have enough money in her one account, and some money in the other. She used direct debit to make a purchase for $6.95 against the account that had no money in it. She believed that one of two things would happen (1) the transaction would be rejected (2) money would move from one account to another.

Coincidental to a consumer complaints I read earlier, the single transaction went through 5 times, instead of once, and she was charged an overdraft for each occurrence. The $31 charge per overdraft is considered "customer courtesy" so that a transaction does not get rejected.

The service provider that charged the transactions didn't understand why it went through so many times, but promptly removed all but the one $6.95 charge.

This now leaves my daughter dealing with the bank that claims that she should pay for every overdraft charge, regardless of the fact that the charges to her account were incorrect, unauthorized transactions. She currently owes them $71 (they removed one overdraft charge as a "courtesy") and is threatening legal action if she doesn't pay.
