Compass Bank
Closed account

Here is my complaint with Compass Bank: acct On April 27 my checking account was overdrafted with Compass Bank. I contacted the bank to see if I could resolve this with them. I was told as long as I paid the charge that caused the overdraft, I would have 90 days to pay the fees before the account would be closed due to overdraft. I explained that my husband was currently unemployed, and that I would pay what I could to get the balance down. I paid the amount of the overdraft, and was assured that I had until the end of July to pay the fees. I continued to make small deposits as I could to get the balance down.

My husband recently acquired a job, and was due to be paid on 07/08/05 via Direct deposit to the Compass Checking account. As of Monday 07/11/05, there were no funds. I called Compass Bank and was notified that my account had been closed due to NSF charges. I spoke to a man named Ken initially, and he advised me to contact the branch where I opened the account. I was then transferred to the Compass Bank in Chandler, AZ and spoke to a woman named Joan. I explained my problem to her, and she advised me that there was nothing that she could do, but that she would speak to customer care and have them give me a call back. About 1 hour later I was called by John the Branch Manager. He started off the conversation by telling me that he was just going to repeat what everyone else had already told me. I tried to explain to him that I had called in good faith to resolve this issue, and that I NEVER received a notification of overdraft or account closure. He told me that they had returned mail on the account. I asked when it was returned and he could not tell me. I told him I receive my statements monthly, and that the address on them is correct. He then advised me there was nothing I could do but pay the fees to the collection agency and that I would NEVER be allowed to have an account with Compass Bank again. Because of the way he was speaking to me, I asked to speak to someone else. He refused. I then asked to speak with Joan again since she was at least compassionate to my situation. Joan explained that my husbands payroll check would have been sent back to the company, and that I WOULD be allowed to apply again for an account once the fees were paid.

I do NOT dispute the fees. They were my fault. They had every right to charge them. I do dispute the way I am treated when I contact the company for help. I dispute the information given to me, and the fact that I receive SOME of my mail from Compass, but not all of it. I dispute that 4 months ago, it took me sending a certified letter and a copy of a police report to Compass Bank for them to take care of fraudulent charges done on my account. (After speaking to probably 20 different people). I dispute the fact that they closed my account, and now my credit (which I'm trying to repair) has another blemish on it that could have easily been avoided. Had I been given accurate information, I would have attempted to borrow the funds to cover the fees. I have to verify my address each time I call Compass Bank, and have never been told it was incorrect. I was never called by Compass Bank when mail was "returned"
