I too received a letter claiming I had won $125,000 in US dollars, along with a check in the amount of $3,875 from UnitedHealthcare, drawn on JPMorgan Chase in Syracuse, NY. Red flags went up because my name was misspelled on both documents. Also, the tax rate on prize money is closer to 40% than the amount of the bogus check. The paper weight of the check was the same as the letter. Finally, there was no return address on the envelope, only the words "Standard Life".
However, I believe unsuspecting recipients could mistake these items for the real McCoy at first glance, but after a closer look the pieces don't fit together. I hope action will be taken against these predators.
