An impromptu memorial has been created at the scene were a Wellington journalist was attacked.
Flowers and notes have been left on the footpath on Boulcott St in the central city, where Radio New Zealand worker Phillip Cottrell was set upon as he walked home from work on Saturday morning.
Among the tributes is a note on a Radio New Zealand card which says: "You were a quiet an unassuming man who did not deserve to go out like this. You will missed dearly by your Radio NZ colleagues especially by those who worked with you on night shift."
An autopsy is continuing this afternoon.
Police hope to establish the cause of death and whether a weapon was involved in the 43-year-old's killing.
The autopsy commenced yesterday
