Remove luggage on direct flight

On a direct flight on UA from Indianapolis to Washington Dulles my luggage was removed and directed through Chicago for next day delivery. The reason given is that they needed to remove my luggage and that of other passengers to accommodate paying customer cargo. I waited 45 minutes at Dulles for my luggage and was assured repeatedly that the luggage would arrive.

After 45 minutes I initiated a lost luggage report and only then did they inform me that the luggage was emoved because they had a high paying cargo customer who needed the space in the hold, so they removed several paying customer luggage items. I was traveling to Dulles to attend a family wedding and formal clothing was contained in this luggage. The luggage did not arrive until mid day the following day.
