Gold's Gym Kennesaw Georgia
Gold's Empty promises about new location, equipment is failing (dangerous) due to lack of maintanance, broken equipment isn't fixed for several weeks at a time!

I joined the Gold's Gym in Kennesaw back in August of '08. My workout partner/brother joined in February of '09. We both signed up for their Internet deal, which was a 1-year commitment for $39.99/month and no fees (except for their annual $39.99 "maintenance fee"). Back then the gym still resided at their old location, which has been taken over by Kennesaw State University's athletic department. Prior to moving to their new (current) location around March-April, a big fancy poster was shown to all members as they walked in that displayed the new gym layout for the Spring '09 move. This included brand new state-of-the-art equipment, a tanning room, new LCD TVs (to replace the old CRT TVs), bigger locker room, blah blah blah... Well, May '09 came and reality hit - none of which was promised actually happened. They literally just moved every piece of old equipment to the new location. We now have no TVs in the weight room, whereas before we had four. There is no tanning room. The locker room has no tv, whereas again, we did before. The locker room really is about the same square footage. Okay, fine, maybe they ran out of money. We just dealt with it.

As time went on, however, we started to notice that more and more pieces of equipment were failing or were on their way to failure. There is no way Gold's is inspecting their equipment, unless they're doing it blindfolded! The gym has two of the same pieces of equipment (I don't know the official name for them) that allow you to do pull-ups (unassisted) using the center two handles or various cable-type exercises using the adjustable (vertically) cable-pulley system and various attachments. Anyway, one of those machines' cable broke on one side and we can no longer use it. It was been that way for 3 weeks now! Before that, the alternating bicep curl machine's cable broke too and remained that way for a couple of weeks. Maybe worse of all, several pieces of equipment have large chunks of padding missing, which makes it very uncomfortable to use.
Also, it seems as if they never oil/lubricate the bearings/ball joints of their equipment, it makes very loud squealing noises when used (very annoying and painful to the ears). Another annoyance is that many pins that let you select the amount of weight on several of the machines are either missing or obviously don't belong to that machine (pin diameter is much smaller than the diameter of the hole in the weight bar). Sometimes the pin will start to fall out while exercising! To make matters worse, my brother and I got charged $39.99 (one month's charge on top of our normal charge) for "maintenance fees"! Uh, what are they maintaining? My last annoyance is that this gym plays the same soundtrack over and over, and has done so since I signed up 1.5 years ago. If they gave us members an iPod/MP3-player for free, then they could play one song over and over for all I care. Do they not have more than one set of songs they can play?!

So, my brother and I have recently decided that we've had enough of this crap. We called Gold's financial company, ABC Financial, to officially cancel our memberships. They told us, according to the agreement we signed, that we must give 60-days notice before our membership was official terminated. Uh, that's funny because the sales guy at the gym told us 30 days. Furthermore, this doesn't seem to be the norm with other Gold's gyms: http://www.goldsgym.com/gyms/page.php? GymID=612&sec=15676&cid=7780 and the ABC rep ever caught himself saying "Okay, you'll have to give a 30-day notice..." and quickly corrected himself when asked. Apparently, the Gold's in Kennesaw has a "special" contract. Anyway, shame on me for trusting the nice sales guy instead of reading every last word of the contract. I'll deal with 60 more days at a gym that is falling apart.

I have a feeling that gym will go under, if they don't change their management model ASAP. It was funny and astonishing how very few new faces I saw after New Years, which is when gyms usually recruit most of their new members (i.E., New Year's resolutions). I workout 4-5 times a week consistently, and saw maybe 5 new faces.

My reason for posting on here is to warn other potential gym seekers looking at the Gold's in Kennesaw! Don't make the same mistake I did. Look elsewhere!

Goodbye crappy Gold's!
