On My March telephone bill from Verizon I noticed an unusual charge. My bill is always about the same amount. This month it had increased by about $13. When I checked the bill, I saw I was being charged by ILD Teleservices for "Compufix Tech support & computer repair." This was a surprise since I repair other people's computer and use a Mac myself. I
I called Verizon; they said they had no control over the billing and I had to call ILD. I called ILD and they said they had no control over the billing; I had to call Compufix. I called Compufix and they promised to cancel the service and reverse the charges. I was even given a confirmation number.
This month I opened my Verizon bill and found I had two charges from ILD - Another $13 from Compufix and $15 from "Member's Edge." When I called I found that Member's Edge is an e-mail service. I certainly didn't sign up for that. Well, I called and was promised the "service" would be canceled and the charges would be refunded and again I was given a confirmation number.
Isn't it fascinating that ILD serves as a clearing house for these companies providing these "services" that never notify you that you are receiving these "services?" How do they obtain your phone number in the first place? I was told that "my children" must have signed up for the "services" or clicked on a box by mistake. My children are in their 30s and don't live at home.
This is a pretty nice scam. When I tried to cancel Member's Edge, the woman said I had to listen to her sales pitch before I could cancel the "service." is this how they get customers? Hijack the phone number and then sell the service? Collect the fees from people who don't read their bill and don't notice the extra charge? And ILD washes their hands of the whole affair?
