I am filing this complaint against Stella's Hair Braiding located at 13220 Laurel Bowie Rd.in Laurel, MD 20708 for serviced provided on 2/21. I am claiming the following:
*False advertisement for Tree Braids (see description below) the employee didn't know how to do tree braids. The braider
put old, damaged, tangled hair into the client's hair. The braider tied the customer's real hair into tiny knots.
*Overcharging customer for services not rendered ($200)
*Hair Damage (using outdated hair, different size braids, and pieces of the customer's hair was exposed and caused customer to cut hair off unintentionally).
Stella's hair braiding is an African braiding shop that employs women from several different African continents.
An old friend provided me with a business card from Stella that advertised “Tree Braids which is a fairly new technique here in Maryland. Very few shops have people that can provide this service. I noticed that tree braids are not included on the salon's website.
I went to meet Stella on 2/20. I told her I was not pleased with the quality of hair used in my existing tree braids. Stella looked at my hair and told me she could do better. I was happy to hear that. I love tree braids but I needed more manageable hair that last a longer period of time.
I returned at 8 am the next morning (2/21) and after 3.5 hrs I asked to go to the restroom. The braider had been working on the back of my hair. Tree Braids normally take 3 hours. This lady had only been working on the back of my hair. When I saw the hair I was shocked. This was not the hair Stella had shown me the day before. This hair was regular braiding hair and had no curl or wave. It was big and puffy. I expressed my concern with Stella and the other ladies in the shop. They started telling how I needed to roll the hair and wet the hair. Why pay $200 if I have to go home and do my hair?
Stella kept saying that I picked out the hair but she picked out the hair and showed it to me. I saw one pack of hair in a plastic bag. It appeared to be okay. They put 3 or more packs of hair in my head. I didn't see what they were doing. I looked like Diana Ross on crack! It took 8 hours to do my hair. I didn't know what to say. I was shocked. I kept saying “I can't wear my hair like this to work.” I work in a professional environment. Stella offered to curled the hair and dipped it in hot water. It was better but not good. I left the shop and called back a little later to tell Stella I had too much hair
on my head. I couldn't even comb the hair. It was like a big puff of cotton. I'd never seen anything like it. I returned to the shop with my Sister that evening.
Stella cut some of the hair and I left again. I tried to work with her. My hair was still huge and now lopsided. I called her again to say ‘I can't wear my hair like this”. I wanted my money back so I could get my hair done but I wasn't comfortable demanding it. I hoped Stella would offer something, even half. She didn't offer anything.
I called Stella on 2/26 (Sat). She returned my call on 3/1 (Tues). I flew to Atlanta on 3/3 to visit with family and returned Stella's call when I got there. I told her I really needed her to do something about my hair. I paid but I didn't have a hairdo. She told me to call her when I get back in town.in the meantime, I paid $50 to have the haircut down again and curled. The beautician told me the hair was old and outdated. It's synthetic and you can't do anything else to make it manageable.
I called Stella on 3/7 (Mon) she told me she was off and asked me to call tomorrow. I called her on 3/8 (Tues) after I attempted to cut the hair out of my hair and noticed I was cutting my real hair. The tree braids are supposed to be corn rolls with fake hair coming out of the corn roll. If this hairdo is done correctly the real hair is protected and allowed to grow.instead the braider corn rolled pieces of my hair in all kinds of directions leaving loss of my real hair out. I told Stella about the error and she said every show does tree braids different. I don't think so. I think Stella's shop committed false advertisement to get money for this high priced hairdo. I don't think it's fair what she did and I think she owes me a refund.
