A very sweet young man came to our door and introduced himself, saying he was "earning points" by getting folks to send magazines to the military. He said he himself was going into the military soon. After a conversation (during which money wasn't discussed) he asked us to "sponsor him" so he could win a trip to Italy. We told him we didn't have any money, he said that was ok it "wouldn't cost us a cent out of hand." We said ok, then and he filled out the paperwork chatting the whole while. Then he had us sign, saying it would be $51 for each subscription to be sent to the military overseas. We told him again we couldn't afford it.
His "friends" kept honking and he kept running out to talk to them - in retrospect, obviously a distraction to keep us from questioning him closely about anything.
He said that was ok, we could cancel the next day and it wouldn't cost us anything, but he would get his points for his trip. After he left, we were uncomfortable so we looked in the "small print." Any attempt to cancel or stop payment would cost us a minimum of $20, we had to mail our cancelled check (magically) within 3 days which is impossible, etc.
Long story short, we had to cancel the check with our bank and will be changing our bank account. DON'T BE TAKEN IN NO MATTER HOW SWEET THE YOUNG PERSON SEEMS! We feel like fools having been taken in, we weren't born yesterday and are very careful people!
