A few weeks ago I received a call from a Discover Card representative asking my permission to send me information via mail regarding their Payment Protection Plan. After listening to a long spiel I said fine, send me the information, and I'll read through it.
Several days later I received a letter from Discover thanking me "for enrolling in Discover Payment Protection."
Angered at having been enrolled in the program without my authorization, I called the 877 number provided and voiced my complaint in no uncertain terms. The woman receiving my call apologized and said that the enrollment would be cancelled and that if there was a charge for it on my next statement a credit would follow, etc.
Conducting a Google search I find that there are hundreds of Discover customers with similar complaints about this deceptive and possibly illegal practice. I wonder how many thousands have been duped by this practice, but failed to notice or fight the billing charges (?).
