I recieved in the mail today a packet from the W5YI-VEC GROUP saying that they wanted to "help" me renew my amateur radio license. They would do this for the VERY small fee of $7.00. Now I consider myself a little above "average" intelligence, but nowhere in their 5 pages of inserts did I see how much of the fee ACTUALLY went to the FCC for the license. There was only 1 place on the back of the VERY confusing FCC FORM 605 that said if you were already registered with the Universal License Service, AND had a FRN (federal registration number) you could do it online. Just on instint I went to the FCC website, It took all of 3 MINUTES to register AND get the FRN! Once the registration was complete the renewal process was easy, AND FREE!!! Yes boys and girls there was no FEE AT ALL TO RENEW THE LICENSE!!! The W%YI Group is charging $7.00 to put your application in the computer, a process that takes less than 3 minutes!!! That ain't bad, $140 per hour to type in applications!!!
