I own a house in Arab, AL and my eletricity is provided by Arab Electric Co-Op, I haven't been living on the house for the past 5 month, the only electrical appliance that is turned on is a Refrigerator bought 6 months ago brand-new. I turned off all the breakers on the house except the one that includes the circuit for my refrigerator.
My bill has varied in amounts from $150, $57 to $99 past month) and $22 this month, when I called the company all they can do is check the meter to make sure they didn't read it wrong. Or they keep telling me that my heater was running because it was cold last month (the breaker that the air conditioning unit is on is turned off at my electrical box!!!). I've checked all my wiring on the house and if anyone is electric-savy they will know that eletricity is not like water, it does NOT leaks, unless there is an appliance or something else pluged in that is drawing current. They also told me that a refrigerator draws around $100 to $150 a month anyways, if that is so, how come I got a $57 and now a $22 bill? Maybe ghosts live in my house?
I asked if they could check my meter to see if there is any problems with it, and they said that I would have to pay them so they could send it to a 3rd party company (that they will choose).
I've heard many complaints from other residents in Arab having similar problems with their bills being unstable, whenever I lived in the house I never knew what my bill was going to be, my lifestyle was the same, but my bill wasnt. It could go from $70 one month to $170 the next month and them back to $90 the next month. That was during summer usage with constant air-conditioning running, we usually left the air set at 75 F, and the temperature didn't change that much.
Botton line, since they are the only one that provide eletricity in Arab, AL they can do as they please (and they still tell me that it is a privileage to be a member of their Co-Op). I'm not expecting them to fix my problem I know it won't happen, but maybe with this post people will think twice before moving to Arab. It is a backwards town with backwards and ignorant people running it. I'm doing my part, I'm putting my house for sale and have already moved out of Arab and hope to stay away as possible from it.
