I received a letter stating that i was the sole winner of an international sweepstakes draw, selected through different magazines, editors, internet registrations. The alleged company (zurich and shaw, financial group) sends you a check to be used to cover clearance fees in the amount of 3,185 us dollars. You are given also a telephone number and a secret code to keep so that when you contact that person you give your code and a bunch of information is given to you.
The first thing is that this person (in my case her name was jacqueline robinson) has a very strong accent and does not look to be working for a respected company. They rush you to cash the check and to transfer the money as soon as possible using moneygram, they tell you that you should not say that the transfer would be done due to a sweepstakes winning but to a relative in need that way the transfer company will not ask questions due to the hefty amount you are sending back, they do not want you to go with western union.
If you call a western union officer at 1.800.325.6000 you will get this simple explanation, under us law a winner of any prize can not be asked for money in advance, any attempt to do so is an scam, even western union has notes on their forms to get you alerted on this issue.
