I just purchased a Shiba Inu puppy from All About Puppies, in Largo, FL. On June 12. I was told by the Salesperson that he had luxating patella in his knees. When I asked what that was (not being of the vetrinary profession), I was told by her that it just means that his knees haven't fully developed yet and that he would grow out of it. I then asked about the breeder that he came from, Steve Kruse of Westpoint, IA, and was told by her that he is a great breeder and that they use him all the time. THAT IS OBVIOUSLY WRONG!
I took him to the vet within 3 days of the purchase and was told that the condition is a genetic defect that could one day need surgery. That it is NOT his knees being under-developed. I also found out that this precious little guy has kennel cough and needed to be put on medication.
Two days later, I had to take him to the emergency vet office, because he all the sudden started crying and limping. He would not step down on his right from paw at all. They didn't find anything wrong with him that night and said that nothing was broke or fractured. He has been "babying" that leg ever since.
I decided to look up Steve Kruse online and to my surprise found these reports here against him.
I would love to find out more about how others have handled dealing with this breeder. As for the petstore, I am going to be filing a complaint with the BBB.
