Bad Return Policy and Bad Sales Practice ripoff

I recently purchased a puppy from this store. I was looking to buy a companion pet for my sister who lives alone. I've been thinking about a puppy for her for some time.

In my search for a puppy, I started off at the Family Pet Center located in Greenbriar Mall, Chesapeake, VA. I saw a large selection of puppies I began looking.

I saw an extremely adorable puppy, but all puppies are have a cute quality. The sales person saw me, I think singled me out, and asked if I would like to see the puppy, in a used-car salesman way. I sat with the puppy and not to the puppies fault but he won me over. I love that puppy.

I explained to the salesperson how this puppy was not for me and was for my sister, which is documented on the store's sales receipt. She did not explain any return policy or did not mention that since this was a gift for someone else that I should take some time to consider this decision.

I know, ultimately it is my decision to hand over the money for the puppy, but since they are experienced at selling puppies and are for the best interest of the puppy (I would like to believe) that they would make sure the puppy was going to an appropriate home.

Well, thought the puppy was cute but could not take care of the puppy. She could not financially support the puppy. So the following day I contacted the store and asked if I could return the puppy due to the circumstances that no one could take care of him.

They told me to hold on so I could speak with the manager. A person got on the line and said that they could not give refunds and that it was Virginia state law that prevented them from doing some. I checked and there is no such law. I explained to Family Pet Center that no one could take care of the puppy. They said that it was my responsiblity now and that all I could do was try and sell it myself.

I asked again if they could take the puppy back because they were better situated to take care of the puppy. They pointed out the warranty I signed saying that they could not accept the puppy back unless it was determined by a Veterinarian to be critical ill within 14 days.

I remember the sales person saying I will be happy to go over the warranty with you, just sign and check here. She never mentioned a 14 day warranty of health.

I don't know about legal matters, but the warranty does not state any binding agreement for returns. It just claims a warranty of health.

Well after speaking with this person who later introduced herself as the assistant manager. I said thank you and was left with a knot in my stomach.

I also found out later that I paid almost triple the amount for this puppy than I would have paid elsewhere.
