Denied a Job Because of Credit

I was presented with a contract opportunity by a recruiting firm - Robert Half Management Resources that they were trying to fill in Boston at State Street Bank. Now the recruiter said they outsourced their credit checks to a firm called Sterling—never heard of them. Anyway the last three years I have been in and out of work and fell behind on some bills&so like some 9 million American I have damaged credit. I told them they would not hire me but Robert Half convinced me to go through the interview process... Well they offered me the job, but 24 hours later, Sterling disqualified me. I currently work at a place that required only a criminal check and drug screening. So I am not a criminal, nor a drug addict. But I do not know what to do. I just feel that Robert Half and State Street wasted my time. Some day when the economy picks up, there will be people still trying to straighten their credit and what will happen. You cannot do it without a job. I just do not know what to do.
