Area Rug Return

I purchased an area rug on 2/5/10 and was unable to get back to the store by the 90 day return date (5/6/10) due to a family medical issues. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the rug. The colors and the size didn't work in the area that I intended for it to go after I took it ouf of the bag, which wasn't immediate. I went back to the store that I originally made the purchase and the staff there was nice and friendly, but was unable to help me. They offered me with my receipt and license $19.00 on an $80.00 rug. Are you serious? One of the managers on duty, suggested that I call customer support b/c there, they can make the exception whereas the store couldn't. Well, I called customer support as suggested and I got James, who was not helpful at all. He insisted that there was nothing that could be done and that "they" being Target, was making the exception by offering me the $19.00 and even accepting the return. I asked to speak with a supervior and James, repeatedly said that I would be told the samething by the supervisor. Well he was correct. The supervisor wasn't anymore helpful than James. The only assurance that the supervior gave was, that NO ONE in Target's corporation could make the exception and that was just their policy. I am extremely upset, disappointed and disgusted with your policy and the service that I received from the phone reps. Your policy needs revamping and your phone reps need re-educating/retrained. I understand that I was past my timeframe, but as a busy consumer who had family medical issues... I wasn't able to get to the store to make the return, that I made time to go shop for in the first place. Not only that, I wasn't asking for cash back, I was asking for a gift card to make another purchase, so technically you weren't losing anything. As a former customer representative and manager of a retail store myself, I know that there is always an exception that can be made if you want to and that you never quote your policy to your customer. I can read and I don't need anyone to assume that I can't. The exception to me would have been for Target to return the area rug, with my drivers license and receipt that they were insistent that I have, for the price that I purchased it for and given me the opportunity to purchase soemthing else within the store. That would be making the exception. You would have kept and made a happy customer. That's service that would keep a customer coming, but to get bad service as I did only makes me not shop at your store anymore and for sure makes me spread the word. Target is not immune to having to close a few of its doors because of slow business or sales... And word of mouth sales and spreads better than any deal or advertisement that you could pay for. I would have thought better of your store. Thanks for nothing.

Signed,

Highly Disappointed
