Bank account garnishment

In 4 years before we were married, my wife had credit problems and had her car reosessed. A year or so later, the credit company then told her that she still owed over $4000, but there was no correspondence from anyone requesting the amount.in June or 2008 (we have no paperwork to verify the date), she was notified of a court appearance in regards to this unpaid debt. Due to her embarrasment and wanting to take care of this on her own, she did not inform me of the court appearance. At the court, she admitted the debt and with a mediator and the lawyer representing the collection agency agreed to make restitution. When she asked where and to whom to send the payment, the attorney who was local and knew nothing of the case and admitted to it, advised her that the company would contact her and give her the info on where to send the payment. She had fully admitted to the debt and wanted to clear the debt. There has been no communication (written or verbal) until mid April of when a representative from Wagner and Hunt (collection firm in Margate, FL) called and demanded that she provide a credit card number over the phone to satisfy this debt. This is when I found out about the debt. She informed this person to send documents verifing the amount and we would begin payments. At this time, the representative from Wagner and Hunt questioned the amount we could pay and acted incredulus to learn that my wife had just been laid off from her job of 3 years. She informed him that her unemployment was just being processed and was a matter of record. From April until July 2 we had again heard nothing from Wagner & Hunt with reagrds to the debt. No documents, notification or calls. On July 2 my (our) bank account was garnished for everything in the checking and savings. We have two bank accounts, both names are on each, but I have direct deposit into one and her unemployment is directed into the other. We can both use either account, but one is mine and one is hers. The account attached was mine, with my pay deposited and where I pay all of the bills. Her checks have not been deposited in this (my) account in over 4 years, only mine. My wife acknowledges this debt, as it is hers (I do not acknowledge this) Calls to Wagner & Hunt have not been returned and I have no documentation on this issue and now, no money. Questions: Can this "firm" garnish everyting in the bank account? Why was my wages garnished when I had nothing to do with the debt? Can this "firm" do this without any "paper trail" or notification to us?
