A young girl and a young guy came to my door on February 13 selling magazines. The girl did all the talking. She said she was trying to make money to pay for a trip. She said she lived in the neighborhood, so I thought she was a local high school kid and wanted to help her.
I agreed to place an order, and told her that I would be moving and wanted to know when my order would arrive. She assured me it would be here by the middle to end of March, which was good with me, since I knew I wouldn't be moving before then.
After I filled out the form and gave her my check, she told me that her dad wanted to instill a good work ethic in her by making her offer to do chores for the people who ordered books from her. She said he was a "military guy", and that he wanted her to work hard for her money. I felt bad about that, but she insisted. I asked her what sort of chores she has done for other people, and she said that she had cleaned an RV, washed vehicles, etc. So I told her she could wash my truck. She said she would be back the following day at 4:00 P.M. To complete my chore, after she had completed some chores she had set up for others. She never showed up, and I never heard from her again, nor did I receive the magazines I ordered. My check in the amount of $49 cleared the bank on March 2.
