My mom and I found my brother paralyzed from drugs in CA. Mom (75 yrs old) calls Drug 800 Help line in the phone book. Unknown to her and I it is run by Scientologist and says in phone book, Drug A ABLE (Association for Better Living & Education that owns Narconon that is run by Scientology) 24 hour Help Line & Accredited Drug Treatment 800-413-4954 and Drug A 24 hr Abuse Access Helpline & Drug Rehab Referral 800-413-4936. Two people call and say Narconon Freedom Center in MI is the best in the country one being Jeannie Trahart, 02 Deputy Exe Director Scientology for Expansion in WA DC and another we find out is Nick Thiel who both work for Scientology and Narconon. My mother did not know this and they did not reveal this. Mom thought this was a non-partial referral and she was very stressed out and in time of needed trust. They said this would be the best place for my brother aged 48 a college graduate. They even gave us the name of an Intervention Service.
Before I flew down to help be involved in the family Intervention I checked their website quickly and it sounded good. (No mention of L Ron Hubbard's technique's nor methodologies used and their success rate sounded a little over done 70%.) They said $25,000 for 3 usually 4-6 months and painted a rosey picture of what the place was like.
Before Thanksgiving we could not get a hold of him and finally went by his home and I had to break a window to find him on the floor paralyzed and probably had been there approx. 3 days. He was close to death and we had him hospitalized. All the time telling the Intervention people and Narconon what his condition was. The Interventionist came out anyway and my brother was paralyzed on one side from use of inhalants - Nitrous Oxide. The Interventionist was very worried about my brother being ready for a flight or move and called Nick at Narconon. His words exactly were "Get him here anyway you can". We were told they had medical Detox and the facilities to treat & handle him and get him Physical Therapy. My brother was very alert and oriented and after the Intervention agreed to go. They ripped the catheter out and put him in a wheel chair and let him have a cigarette and then off they went for a grueling flight.
We found out before flying he lost control of his bowels and the Interventionist had to clean him up with my brother in a wheel chair and paralyzed. This was just the first of the demoralizing things he had to go through. Narconon decided to go and pick him up at Chicago and he was left sitting alone, not knowing where he was waiting in a wheelchair with no money all alone.
He got to Narconon Freedom Center in Albion Nov. 30 and on Dec. 1st they sent him to an Emergency Hospital in MI. They knew he had no health insurance and they did not tell us of any of this. He was there 1 day when they sent him to yet another hospital for 5 days. Whatever he signed was during extreme duress as he didn't know where he was or where he was supposed to be. We have know found out he incurred $14,000 worth of medical bills on top of $20,000 for the treatment with Medical Detox he was supposed to have and $3,000 for my mom and I to fly out to get him and take him to a real treatment center and $20,000 for the new treatment center. (Most people aren't as lucky as my brother that our parents could afford at that moment to do this. I hear most are dumped into the streets or run from the facility)
So Narconon takes him back in treatment Dec. 7th and we hear no word on how he is walking (now with a walker, no thanks to Narconon) or how he is. He calls his father Dec. 23 and is very upset and says he is not given anything for his nerve pain, being made to sit in a sauna with lots of Niacin (which can damage his already damaged kidneys) and made to sit for hours doing L Ron's Scientology auditing or Training Routines staring, talking to a box of rocks and being yelled at and verbally abused (bull-baiting). My dad is very upset and calls me and then I start doing a bit of research. I was horrified by what I found out. There were so many complaints that sounded just like ours! So many horror stories about lost loved ones. We then tried to reach him and they would not let us talk to him. Until I threatened them they finally put him on the phone and I was crying that we would come and get him. They then brow beat him and asked him if he still believed in the program and he had to say yes so they wouldn't punish him. Everyone narcs on everyone and you can't trust anyone there. He tried to help other younger kids and a few left and he got in trouble for them leaving asking him what he said to them. He couldn't say anything against L Ron for fear of being put in the box. We finally walked into the center on Jan. 13th 2010 and he found out through another phone call to a friend (they blocked our numbers so he couldn't call us) and as soon as we pulled up he was standing by the window waving. We blew him out of there and everyone was giving us the evil eye as they had no idea we were coming. They wanted us to sign something and I told him don't sign sh_. I guess I'm a SP now. Even their ridiculous language is upsetting. If we had know at all this was L Ron's shop we would have run the other way. Now comes the fun part... Going after them with everything I've got. I don't want this to happen to another vulnerable family. I have nothing against what they want to do for religion or fun, but if you're so proud of all of this why don't you be honest. Why own 250 domain names? Why own Drug Referral 800 Lines (Recruitment!) Why all the Sham Companies instead of saying were proud members of the COS? You wanted to be a religion, now that won't get you into society so you had to be a social service company, ABLE. We all know L Ron only believed in one way... Scientology and Dianetics. So it is all the same just the few words changed here and there.
My brother is in a REAL treatment center with the twelve step program now in CA and I pray he can get over the hell they put him through. It will take all of our family a long time to get over this during the most stressful time in our lives. Please get the word out and keep fighting the fight... Save a family and hopefully someone's loved one who needs real drug or alcohol treatment.
