The J. Micheal Kelly law firm takes advantage of there clients. When I had my free consultation with Jack Bennett he assured me they would do all they can to help me. My consultation went pass the free hour. Mr. Bennett called my wife's lawyer a hack and even claimed to know the judge involved. I showed him my pay checks and my disability paper work. As a peace officer hurt in the line of duty I was upfront with them about my not having a lot of money to spend. They were very sympathetic about my situation even telling me that it would be a very simple case. I asked when could I see my son. Jack Bennett said in 1 month. I was very emotional to hear that. When I left that day it was the first time in 3 year I could smile.
While that feeling did not last long. To keep cost down I only worked with a paralegal named Homar Cornejo. He cost me as much as a lawyer, my retainer was gone in a week. I could not believe it. I was crushed I received bill after bill from them. With in two months my bill was over $12,000 dollars not including my $3500 retainer! I called them with disappointment about the charges, because I explained at my free consultation with Jack Bennett, I was on disability only getting $2000.00 a month. Well they treated me with collections.
I finally fought back, I reported them to the BBB, the BAR, and the L.A. Court lawyer complaint office. Well they contacted me with a settlement and after hours of discussion we both agreed that my case was not handled professionally. My bill went from $12,000 to $0, but I lost my $3500 retainer. Well not only did I lose my retainer my Ex-wife is mad at me for the way thing were handled. I never received a apology or even a simple sorry. Not one person admitted to doing anything wrong. They just blamed it on the next person. It was like no one talked to each other at that firm! I am now representing myself in court filling out my own paper work.
