Work-at-home opportunity not for real!

Published "Monday
A company that claims consumers can work from their homes and triple their investment "does not offer employment, " according to Bob Wessinger, director of operations for the Better Business Bureau of Central South Carolina and Charleston.

"We have had numerous complaints about this company from consumers, " said Wessinger. Beaufort area consumers have complaints against the company may call toll free, 800-892-3584.

According to an information flyer this firm advertises, "You will be paid $1.40 for each envelope you stuff and seal for our companyguaranteed." The company advertises work-at-home opportunities and charges a $25 deposit, which it claims will be returned to the consumer in triple ($75) with the first paycheck, " according to the bureau reports.

The flyer goes on to say "You will also be given an additional up-front $225 Cash Sign-Up Bonus for going to work for our company."

This same phone number is identified with the same scheme in numerous locations throughout the United States. This phone number, 212-615-6424, is actually in New York City. This company does business under many different names.
"This work-at-home offer uses post office boxes, mail drop locations and telephone numbers answered only by recorded messages, which makes it difficult to discuss concerns with the actual owner, " the bureau reports.

In several instances, participants were informed by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service that their use of the mails in their business or promotion may violate the Lottery, Mail Fraud and/or False Representation Law, 18 U.S.C. 1302,1341 and 39 U.S.C. 3005.

Bureaus from five states (Ohio, Oregon, Florida, Indiana and Texas) have "unsatisfactory" reports on the company due to unanswered complaints, failure to address the cause of the complaints and for making unsubstantiated advertising claims.

"Envelope stuffing is a common scam in which you often receive only instructions on how to go into the business of placing the same kind of ad the advertiser ran in the first place instead of items to stuff into envelopes, " the bureau advised.

"The U.S. Postal Inspection Service knows of no work-at-home promotion that ever produces income as alleged, " the bureau reported.
