We pruchased a 10 year old gelding paint from Roberta Bavaro of Medina Ohio from the information we found in Dream Horse for $2,000.00 on December 30. She reported the horse to be in perfect condition but said he likes to lay down a lot more than other horses. After about 2 months the local vet from Lisbon Ohio was called in and said he was suffering from severe collic.
On March 4 he was taken to Equine Specialty Hospital in Burton Ohio and after examination Dr. Jackson reported that he would have to have an operation to correct a kinked colon. After they opened him up they repaired the kinked colon but discovered an enlarged secom that he probably had from birth. This condition is uncommon but not rare. Dr. Jackson reported that he had a rough 10 years and he had probably been in pain all of his life from this condition.
On March 17 Dr. Jackson reported that they had exhausted all available treatments but he could be kept alive but his quality of life would be poor at best having to stay at the hospital and probably never be able to come home. He left the decision to us. We wanted to keep him alive but realized his suffering would only get worse so we had to think of him instead of ourselves so we told Dr. Jackson to put him down.
He passed peacfully at about 11:40 AM. This report is very hard to write. Spirit was a member of our family and a kind and gentle horse. It was easy to form an attachment to him. People who let animals suffer like this should be put down them selves not to mention the heart ache they cause to people they sell their animals to.
Money wise we paid $2,000.00 for the horse and his medical bills were over $8,000.00.
