Being curious about my recently diagnosed diabetes, I figured spending about $50.00 for a book regarding a "Weird Spice that Cures Diabetes (cinnamon), I ordered the print/on-line version of the "Diabetes Cure". The invoice showed a total cost to be charged to my account as $51.12 which was charged to my account the day of the order, including shipping and handling of $9.95 (postage could not have been more than $3.00). Printed the receipt but only looked at the bottom line to verify the amount. As I am running 2 extremely busy companies, my time is extremely limited, I did not read the fine print on the receipt.
I was immediately bombarded with daily emails (which I did not read as I was waiting for the book to arrive, which was about 8 days after the order). Looked at my bank statement today and saw a charge from Barton Publishing in the amount of $99.00. At that point, I pulled out the receipt and discovered that I had a 5-day window to review the material (which did not arrive within that time frame); after that time they would charge an ADDITIONAL $99.00 "membership fee" that would be renewed every year thereafter at the cost of $37.00. I was of the impression that I was only ordering a book as the "membership"; this is only disclosed on the receipt AFTER you have placed an order.
Called the customer service number on the invoice and told the agent that I was extremely upset and that this company is a sham for not fully disclosing all of the terms, conditions and costs associated with their product. He attempted to explain that I had only ordered the "on-line" version of the product, which was incorrect. After several minutes of conversation, I believe he realized that I knew about consumer protection laws and at that point volunteered to cancel my "subscription" and refund my money. To not use this company!!!
