Excelsior College
Consumer Report

I enrolled in the BSN online program with this school. On January 4th, I was approved for a private student loan. I received an e-mail informing me that the loan was waiting on the school to respond. I spoke to the school which informed me that the loan can take up to 10 business days. The school financial aid said I could place the payment on my credit card, and as soon as they receive the loan check they would mail it out to me, and I would be able to pay for credit card statement.By February 1st, I had yet to receive any check so, I contacted the school. I was told I needed to fill out a study plan prior to them approving a loan for me. This was never mentioned to me in the original January 4th conversation. Nevertheless, I completed the study plan, and on February 6th they told me it would take up to 10 business days.By March 12th I had still yet to receive anything from the school, nor any kind of information regarding the loan.
My issues pertaining to the school courses are many. A few weeks into the semester I began to feel that the support and student services were extremely minimal. I constantly felt lost and unsure of what needed to be done or steps that needed to be taken. It has been issue after issue, with constant repetitive conversations, and I being the only one contacting the school. If I do not contact them about any given situation, they do not contact me, or let me know what the status is on the problems that I may be having. On February 15th, I decided to withdraw from a course that the school insisted I needed to take prior to beginning my nursing courses. I had taken the particular course before, but they insisted I needed an upper level version of it. While taking the course, I saw nothing upper level about it.in fact I was learning nothing, and the previous course that I had taken was way more advanced than the one given at this school. I saw the class as wasted time, and decided to withdraw and just test out of it. I remained with two other courses to complete. On March 2nd, I was completing one of the two courses that remained. As I attempted to access the exams I kept receiving an error message saying I was unable to access the exam. I kept attempting it, even from different PC’s and nothing. I tried contacting the school, and there was no one available. They claim to have 24 hour technical support so, I tried several times to connect to the technical support, and each time they would disconnect me without any response. This went on throughout the weekend, until I was left with no choice, but to wait until Monday morning to speak to an actual live person over the phone. The woman over the phone was extremely non-friendly, and proceeded to tell me that I now needed to wait 2 business days and appeal my grade. Two days later the appeal was denied. They said I need to pass a module test with a certain percentage in order to move on to the next, which is why the error message kept popping up. My argument is had I known this, I would have re-taken the module test and been able to move on and complete the course, but with no support or any answers from this school how was I supposed to know. I feel that this decision on their behalf is extremely unfair, especially when the course is a very simple non-instructor course. They are unwilling to come to any kind of resolution of this problem.in fact, once again, I am unable to get a hold of anyone that can help me with this. I now have an ‘F’ on my transcript, which has lowered my 3.5 G.P.A. That I had. The fact that this school has no kind of support team terrified me, and I decided to withdraw from all coursed all together. I do not want to take any chances with a school that is of no help, and seems like a total scam.
I continued to inquire about my loan. On March 8th, once more they said they needed to check up on it, and it will again, take 10 business days. Finally on March 12th, they sent me an e-mail saying that they cannot approve the loan due to the fact that I have withdrawn from my courses. I have been waiting since January, had the office done the correct procedure, I would have received my loan and been able to pay my credit card long before withdrawing from any courses. Horrible and despicable school is all I can say. I ended spending $2,090 on absolutely nothing; none of which they are willing to give back. I am also stuck with a credit card bill accruing interest fees. The least they could do is allow me to take exam and complete class so that my G.P.A. Does not lower, but they are of no help.
