MetaCreations has decided to focus on e-commerce and to divest its line of great graphics applications. These applications are amongst the best available to digital imaging right now, Painter, Bryce, and so many more are in the tool box of most professional graphic artists working digitally.
What troubles me is twofold: first, people were encouraged to buy Painter 6 (for example) knowing fully well that it needed some extra work, as it was released with many well known bugs in the Windows version, and a few but significant ones in the Mac too. So people went ahead expecting MetaCreations to issue patches in the near future, and to continue developping this amazing tool. Yet, at the time Painter 6 was released, it now seems obvious that MetaCreations already knew that it would no longer continue to develop it, and had already decided to put it up for sale ("divesting"). Secondly, Painter and other "ex-MetaCreations" products are now marketed aggressively, while no mention is ever made of their status within the company plans! People are encouraged to buy, at the full price, products that could very likely already be obsolete!
This is apparently a usual rip-off situation amongst the software industry, maybe now is the time to tell companies that they will no longer get away with it!
