A month prior to the end of my one year commitment for hosting services, I emailed 1and1 to notify them that I would not be renewing. I never heard a word from 1and1 in response. Eight months after I had switched to another host I received a notice from a credit collections agency stating that I owed 1and1 for a years internet service, plus all fees associated with the collection thereof. I placed my initial order on line with Visa and in comments informed them my only commitment was to a one year, non-renewable service. After I refused to pay for a second year, which I was neither using nor did I agree too, 1and1 showed up as a negative on my credit report. I have attempted numerous times to get 1and1 to remove this false negative, but they refuse contact. Since that time I have received at least two requests for favorable reports about how good their service has been.
If their service was up more than 80% of the time, and they were not constantly moving your site between host servers, I might have continued to use their hosting, but I spent eight months trying to get them to provide the SLA's they promised, which never happened. At one point my site was offline for 10 days; during that time it was either impossible to get tech support, when I did I would stay on hold for an average of 40 minutes, or the offshore tech support person would tell me they were working on the problem and they would get back to me. No follow-up was ever attempted by 1and1.
