So my Sprint PDA dies and I have the $7/month plan from Asurion. I'm told to call them. I go online/call them and they tell me they don't have a Palm Pre in stock (keep in mind ebay has hundreds of them available for less than $50)... I don't think to look before I go thru them. My fault! So they tell me they can upgrade me to a different phone (HTC Hero). Not excited about it. But okay. It's a $100 deductible on top of the $7 I'm paying.
It comes the next day as promised. I go to activate the phone and it's already activated with a different Sprint user!!! BTW, the Hero can be purchased on ebay form $60 to $80.
So they are sending another one. We'll hope it comes in and works. So let's review their business model:
Bill a customer $7 for the right to sell you a phone for $100 that I can buy all day for $30 to $80. Can we say... Self insure? This is a ripoff plain and simple. I learned my lesson. You don't need insurance if you plan to replace a phone that cost less than your deductible. Do your research and determine if your risk/reward model works for you. As for me, I'll buy a few backup phones for $50 ish and self insure. There are so many refurbed and good used phones on the market. Get one from a reputable seller that has purchase protection and stop paying for a service you don't need.
