I have given money to many causes but am weary when a non-profit refuses to open its books to an audit by the public that funds it. Such is the case with the Positive Radio Network in Freeport, Maine and Lawrence, Mass. Also, it is known as the Downeast Christian Brodacasting Corp. When I asked about how my gift was being used I was not given any breakdowns for budget but a general statement "to reach the lost". The GM got very emphatic when I asked to see the specific breakdown of where the money was going to. When I asked to have my gift back because I was not happy with the answer she said no.
Upon further investigation the radio station has had lawsuits and fines levied against them, one from the FCC. I fear that I am not the only one who wonders how my gifts were being used.
I am not saying that the station is not doing its job, but if you are a gift giver beware of any organization that refuses to be open about their finances and budget because you have a right to know.
