Grand Canyon University
Bad Academic Advising and Communication

On 10/29 I was enrolled in SPE586. I spoke with Emily Bolin, my academic advisor, and on 9/3 we dropped this course and added SPE571. Ms. Bolin's instructions to me was go to the class and email the instructor that I was a late add, so that I did. At this time, Ms. Bolin did not instruct me to make a post in lieu of being automatically dropped from the course. The instructor posted that week 1 was frantic due to the new Angel layout and that she will be lenient to these posts and assignments. On Friday 11/13 I logged into my class and seen the group I had been assigned to for CLC group of week 3. However on Sunday 11/15 the day I normally post work, no class was there. This date was mid week 3 and on this date, I was posting weeks 1 and 2 assignments and journals, and understood that I would be missing (2pts) for discussion posting. I was however going to post discussion for week 3, which was not late at this time. I could not contact anyone at the university at this time so I waited until Monday morning. On Monday morning I contacted Emily Bolin via telephone and she assured me that she would take care of the matter. I did not hear back from Ms. Bolin on Monday.
On Tuesday, I emailed Ms. Bolin and she replied that she was working with tech support to correct this matter and she would get back to me. I then received another email from Ms. Bolin on 11/17 and she asked me if I only sent the instructor the email, I replied I did exactly what she instructed me to do. On Wednesday 10/18 I received an email from Ms. Bolin that I was not allowed back into the class per her manager Mr. Dykman. I spoke with Mr. Dykman regarding this situation. Mr. Dykman stated that I had been "auto-dropped" due to inactivity for 8 days. He advised me that I would not be receiving any refund from being "auto-dropped" from this class. Mr. Dykman also stated that he had presented my situation to the Dean's office and that he received instruction from the Dean's Office, via email, not to re-enroll me due to my inactivity in the class. He then stated that we were now in week 4 and that there was no way that I would pass the class at this point. I explained to Mr. Dykman that we were only at the end of week 3 which will allow me to post and receive credit for week 3, as well as credit for week 1 and week 2. I asked Mr. Dykman to forward this email to me while I waited on the phone, I never received this email. After our discussion he told me to send an email explaining my acknowledgment of making up the work in this class which will be the instructor's discretion, which that I did. I spoke with Mr. Dykman today and he informed me again of the Dean's instruction and then he directed me to Dr. Lapradde and again I discussed the sitation to no avail.
The policy states that the university can auto-withdraw is the student is not attending, it is not specific to posting for online students.
