This is an open letter to ALL students who I have enrolled into Kaplan University...
I work for Kaplan University's Fort Lauderdale (Cypress II) location as an Admissions Advisor. I started working for Kaplan after they found my resume from one of the big online job-search sites. Being a huge advocate of education and knowing Kaplan's history and the role they play in education, I willingly accepted the position knowing that I could "make a difference".
Needless to say, my bright-eyed innocence quickly fell away to the reality of what my job was all about... Sales. The job which I honestly believed would lead to a career became nothing but quotas. Metrics had to be met, minimum standards had to be adhered to, and enrollments had to happen REGARDLESS OF WHAT WAS PROPER AND BEST FOR THE STUDENTS. To quote my Director of Admissions, "They (the students) don't know what is best. They are afraid of their own shadows, have been losers most of their lives, and for the most part, really don't have a clue. You have to show them!"
With last winter's addition of a new Executive Director to Cypress II (who feels compelled to add the initials "MBA" to all of her emails—insecure are ya?), all of the aforementioned realities became bitter daily toil. While there are many Admissions Advisors who have no problem doing what they do, I became one of the growing minority who have found a consciousness. It really hit home for me a couple of weeks back when after listening into one of my phone calls, my Associate Director of Admissions told me to start "dumbing down" my language when speaking with students.
I guess that I can say that I've had enough with Kaplan University. They disrespect their employees, their founder (Stanley Kaplan is a wonderful man), themselves, and most of all, their students.in Kaplan University's view, you are nothing but easy dollar signs. They don't care if your educated... Just as long as you are enrolled. Financial Aid's got your back (and your future debt)!
To all who I have enrolled in the name of a job... I am sorry!
