The Louisiana Technical college system was set up to serve the communities in which they were built, but it seems that just the opposite is taking please. T.H. Harris Technical College and other technical college in the Louisiana Technical College system is destroying education in our communities.
It is easier to get into Harvard or Yale than T.H. Harris in Opelousas, La. Personally I believe standards are raised especially in the Practical nursing program to discourage minorities from entering. T.H. Harris is in the heart of an African American community that is below the proverty line and when denied admission into a higher standards program they usually go into a lower standard more labor driven program.
I am very fortune that I have a vehicle and resource that will get me to another city to obtain my education, but for some it is not that easy. At T.H. Harris Technical College my Compass and ACT test scores were lost, along with my application with personal info. I was denied use of an ACT approved calculator on my Compass test that only had 5 questions. I know that it is not possible to determine someone's compentency in Mathematics with a five question test.
I dread going into the office at this place. There are some African Americans who are employed in the office who discriminate against you more than a caucasian. They treat an intelligent African American student as if they are ignorant or some low life on the street or something. All I know is this this school faculty and staff needs to get it together.
