While walking to my car, after picking up my dry cleaning from Perfect Cleaners, I was approached by two men in a blue PT Cruiser.
The driver, Antonio, asked if I could help him. He claimed that he was a designer from Italy, not a salesman, for Reportage Giorgio Armani and that they had just finished a show in Beverly Hills. They were on there way to the airport and wanted to sell the last three remaining sample leather jackets.
Both the driver and the passenger were stylishly dressed - a polished performance.
Antonio showed me his Italian passport and an envelope that looked to contain airplane tickets. He stated that he had lost $10,000 at a casino playing blackjack the night before.
He claimed that he wanted to sell the samples to pay the rental car fees. There were two black and one brown suede, each was a different style. I inspected the jackets, both inside and outside for defects and they all looked of decent quality.
After deliberating for a few minutes I declined the offer. Antonio pressed me in an attempt to persuade me otherwise. The guys are good!
So I decided to call my wife. I asked her look up the brand on the internet. While she was able to verify the brand, she also found reference to the scam here on usacomplaints.com.
Antonio listened while I communicated with my wife until he had heard enough presumably. At which point, and without a word, got in his car and drove off.
I stood there in the parking lot laughing with my wife thankful that I didn't fall for this scam.
