I had new windows installed by Modern earlier this year. We had been planning on using a different company, but the salesman from Modern enticed us with all sorts of things, one of which was the referral program, so we ended up going with them.
A few days later, we recieved a call from the company asking us whether or not we were satisfied and telling us a little bit more about the referral program. At that point in time, my husband mentioned that my parents had just bought a house and that they might be interested, but he did not know their phone number, so he gave the man only their names. My parents recieved a phone call the very next day from Modern asking to set up a consultation.
My mother assumed I had given Modern her phone number and she agreed to the meeting even though she had no plans on actually agreeing to having the windows installed, as money can be an issue for them, especially right after buying a new home. I had, of course, raved to my mother about Modern's services and how happy we were with our new windows and with our salesman, and I had told her about the referral program.
BECAUSE OF THIS, and ONLY because of this, my parents agreed to have new windows installed. Had she talked it over with me first, I would probably have tried to talk her out of it, just because I know that right now they do not need the expense of new windows. My mother, however, thought that she would help both of us out in that I would get the referral bonus and she would get nice new windows all at the same time.
Long story short, we have yet to recieve any such bonus. We were planning on taking that bonus and sending it right back to them as another payment towards our windows, but they are jerking all of us around instead of holding up their end of the deal. My mother has had to call the company back to her house multiple times to fix a mistake they made while installing her new siding glass door, and on EACH occasion that she had to call to have someone come out and numerous other occasions as well, she has requested that they send us the bonus and they promise her up and down that it will be going out "that Friday". It has been over two months and "that Friday" hasn't seem to come yet. She has spoken with the customer service guy, the referral program guy, the lady in the office, and the OWNER himself, and they have all just pacified her to get her off the phone and not actually done a thing.
And, to top it off, the more we look at our windows the more we notice that they didn't do nearly as nice of a job as we originally thought. They removed the trim around all of them and replaced it with ugly wood (which no one at any point in the process told us was going to have to happen), they chipped my walls around some of them, they left nails and garbage in my driveway because it was raining when they left, etc.
Modern has lost a lot of business by doing this to us - We are only planning on staying in this house for another two years, tops. Hopefully the previous owners of our next home will have had the windows replaced already, but if not, I know that we will definitely not be using Modern, but instead, probably the company they stole us away from originally. We are a young family, and we have plenty of friends that are just beginning to look into buying their own home, and we would have referred them as well. At this point, I am so disappointed in the way that the company has just brushed us off and snaked it's way around things that I am telling all my neighbors not to even consider Modern as a choice for their home improvement needs. A company should not advertise and promote a program that they have no intention of honoring.
