My sister contacted Steven Klein, owner and operator of Klein Contracting, Inc., a roofing company in the Minneapolis / St. Paul suburb of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota. Since Mr. Klein has no real business address, and works out of his residence, my sister had to meet him at a seedy bar in south Minneapolis to do business. She agreed to meet him at the tavern one day around noon, and found Mr. Klein in a fairly high state of intoxication. Klein had said he had already done a "drive-by" of my sister's house and quoted a very attractive estimate for the re-roofing job. Against her better judgment, she reluctantly decided to go ahead and hire Steve Klein for the repair work, writing a check to him for $1000 as a deposit.
Mr. Klein said he would start on the 14th of the month, but as that date came and went, my sister tried in vain to contact him, either on his cell or home phone. Mr. Klein apparently screens calls, as he never picked up the phone any time she would try to call him. One day, she called his home number from a friend's cell phone, and Mr. Klein picked it up right away. When Klein discovered who was on the other end, he completely lost his temper and shouted a long stream of obscenities at her, telling her to never call his home phone again.
My sister went to Mr. Klein's home (with her 6' 4" husband along) and knocked on the door. Mr. Klein came out, yelling at both of them and threatening them. Klein said "if you ever come around or call me again I'm going to f—ck you up in a real big way... I know where you live!"
My sister called the St. Louis Park police, but they told her there was nothing they could do, and that Klein has a right to keep people off his property, even if he was being a total jerk about it. My sister is out the $1000, and cop suggested that she file a small claims lawsuit against Steven Klein and Klein Contracting, Inc.
Do not ever, EVER do business with Klein Contracting, Inc., unless you want to end up fighting him in court. Or end up getting hurt.
