June 15 Man from Pro Gas & Heating came to repair my basement gas fireplace. It needed a new part (I believe it was a gas valve) The ignition worked and pilot light came on but when turned to "burn" it would not stay on.
Man who came on afternoon of June 15/09 stayed for about 45 min. He took the whole unit apart. Spent some time in his truck on the phone. Returned to house and told me he was unable to repair it - he would have to get someone else to come, he put the whole thing back together before he left.
I called the office, spoke to Ed who said Brad would come and fix it. Ed did mention that he (Ed) should not have sent the other man.
That evening Brad did come. He took the fireplace apart, said he did not have the part and would have to get it and come back in the morning. Because I had an appointment the next day I asked him to back on Wednesday, he said he would and asked if it would be okay to leave the unit apart to save time when he got the valve. I agreed, he asked me for a deposit on the part (Ed had already requested a deposit and I agreed). Brad said Ed wanted $350.00 and because I had dealt with the company for many years - 10 years or more - I gave him a $350.00 deposit and was asked to make it payable to a numbered Company 0841026 B.C. Ltd.
Brad did NOT come on Wed June 17 so I phoned Ed the following day and he told me that Brad had the flu and would be away a few days but he would call me. I waited until after the weekend, then hearing nothing phoned again.
This time Ed said that Brad was picking up the part. The next day I called again and was told that Brad had the part with him in his truck. They would get back to me.
This calling went on every few days. I was given such stories as - "I'm just checking the appointments & I will have to phone you back" - NO call back — Another time I was told Brad was sick again. Other times there was either no answer or when he answered Ed would say "I'm in the middle of an important meeting, I'll have to phone you back" - He did not call.
After being given this run-around for about 2-3 weeks I called on the afternoon of July 7th. Spoke to a lady, who at first said, that she was making appointments for repairs for the middle of the following week. I got upset and told her of the run-around and that I had given a cheque on June 15th. She was sympathetic, said she appreciated how I felt, could sense the frustration in my boice and assured me that Brad would be there the next day, but after 3PM. She repeated that he would be there, she was very re-assuring.
July 8th - my grandson's birthday. I stayed home all day (just in case Brad came early) I missed my grandson's birthday dinner and Brad did not come and nobody gave a courtesy phone call to say that they would not be coming.
I phoned the next day & was told that Brad had a family emergency and had to go home early. - Still no calls & nobody came.
I started to call again & again and most of the time there was no answer. When Ed did answer he was always checking & would call back. He NEVER did.
Finally I got the girl on the phone, who without saying anything, put me straight to Ed. - Ed sounded furious. Told me to stop calling, he would not put up with me calling every 20 minutes. When I told him it was 2 hours since he said he would call me back, he "grunted" and said "You called yesterday". I replied that I did not because I was waiting for his call. — He was always going to call me back.
He told me not to call again, he would not speak to me and that he would call me when Brad could come - I reminded him I had paid for the part and he said "I'm finished talking to you and you're NOT to call any more".
I did not call any more, but on July 17th my daughter Brenda called Ed and got exactly the same run-around. All she wanted to know was when he was going to fix the fireplace. He told her his guy was sick and the part was in his truck. She offered to drive over and pick up the part, but Ed said it was too expensive. He told her that Mrs. B. Had been a long time customer and he was going to call her on the Monday but now that he had given my daughter his answer he was not calling on Monday - (His answer of everything was that the part was in his guys truck and his guy was sick) My daughter said that was not an answer and he told her to stop bullying him. She said she was not bullying him she just wanted the fireplace fixed as her mom had sold and would be moving July 28th.
He told my daughter his conversation was finished and hung up.
I have never heard anything more from Ed or his Company and subsequently have paid the new owners of my home $350. As they had another Company come in and fix it.
We have to stop this man from ripping off more people.
