A residential moving company is $1300 dollars richer, at my expense.
The moving company was contracted to move me less than 2 miles... I spent almost a week researching various moving companies and doing what I felt was "prudent" homework to ensure they were professional, honest, and a company who would stand behind their service guarantee.
The movers showed up on the date and time promised (well, 15 minutes late) to complete the move. Having moved 3 times in the past 20 years, I was confident in my choice and was assured many times by their staff, there will be no problems-they are true professionals and are there to help you every step of the way.
What a joke - it took them over 12 hours to move 5 rooms of apartment furnishings. They assured all items would be carefully blanket/carton wrapped to protect the furniture items from damage. Should any minimal damages occur the movers would do patch up work on the day of the move. And if you have any left over items you do not have time to pack—don't worry they will take care of that too.
Well, they did. They tossed a stereo receiver, tape deck, VCR & CD player in one box-after I had instructed them to pack in the boxes they originally came in.
They left 81 items behind & when contacted why this happened: I was informed it was just a "communication oversight".
They packed small/breakable items with larger items. Never bothered to bubble wrap the smaller items to protect them.
They overcharged me $10.00 an hour from the rate originally quoted. They charged me for packaging items which is against California Maximum Rate Tariff 4.
Countless pieces of furniture were damaged due to improper packaging or handling from point A to point B. Case in point, the mattress and box spring was ripped and torn on all four sides on each piece including a large tear in the box spring. Guess they must have run out of blanket wrap!
I had personally moved a 14 foot truck full of valuable sentimental items to make the move-from address less congested so the movers would have easy ingress and egress from the unit. And I did this to protect these items from damage - since they could not be replaced.
And if you can believe this-they had the audacity to ask for a tip on top of the ridiculous amount of money I had to pay them or my items would have been held hostage.
