Unilever complaints: how to reach the company, recalls and where to complain (checked October 16, 2026)

This page covers Unilever PLC and its U.S. operating company, Unilever United States, Inc., as the maker of household and personal-care brands such as Dove, Knorr, Hellmann's and Love Beauty and Planet (BBB lists these among alternate names for its Unilever file). Each product has its own labeling and warranty-style terms, so keep the lot code and receipt for the item you are asking about.

Company channels. Unilever USA's contact page (opened on 2026-10-16) lists a Customer Care Line 800-298-5018, a contact form for 'any comments or questions about our company or brands', and a postal address of 111 River Street, Hoboken, New Jersey 07030. Media inquiries go to a separate press address. For other countries, unilever.com asks visitors to use the location selector to find the local site.

Product recalls. Recalls run through the manufacturer and the FDA for cosmetics and personal care. Three Unilever U.S. notices posted by the FDA that were identified on 2026-10-16 are summarized in the recalls section below; the list is not presented as complete. Adverse reactions to cosmetics can be reported to the FDA's MedWatch program, as the 2022 notice itself states. The 2022 notices listed consumer lines (877-270-7412 for the dry shampoo notice and (866) 204-9756 for the Suave notice); those numbers come from 2022 announcements and may be out of date, so check the current brand page before calling. The Customer Care Line above is the number on Unilever USA's current contact page.

If the company does not resolve it. Options include a BBB complaint, your state attorney general's consumer protection office, and for product-safety incidents the FDA (cosmetics, food) or SaferProducts.gov (consumer products). Our archive complaints about Unilever date from 2006 to 2013 and describe products as sold then; brand ownership has since changed in places (see the company background section).

Product recalls involving Unilever U.S. (FDA-posted company announcements identified on 2026-10-16)

Dry shampoo aerosols, October 18, 2022. The FDA posted a company announcement (FDA publish date October 21, 2022) in which Unilever United States said it 'issued a voluntary product recall to the consumer level of select lot codes of dry shampoo aerosol products produced prior to October 2021 from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé due to potentially elevated levels of benzene.' The notice says that, 'Based on an independent health hazard evaluation, daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences', that Unilever had 'received no reports of adverse events to date', and that 'An internal investigation identified the propellant as the source'. It told consumers to stop using the affected products and to visit UnileverRecall.com for reimbursement instructions; it lists Unilever U.S. consumer line 877-270-7412 and links a product and UPC list. The FDA page states that it posts company announcements as a public service and does not endorse the product or company.

Suave 24-Hour Protection aerosol antiperspirants, March 30, 2022. In another FDA-posted announcement, Unilever United States said it was 'voluntarily recalling two Suave 24-Hour Protection Aerosol Antiperspirants to the consumer level' (Powder 4 oz and 6 oz; Fresh 6 oz) after 'slightly elevated levels of benzene in some product samples', traced to the propellant, covering 'all lots of the products below with an expiration date through September 2023'. The notice says the product line 'was discontinued in October 2021 for business reasons' and that Unilever would offer reimbursement. The notice lists a consumer line, (866) 204-9756.

Knorr Sopa soup mixes, August 10, 2023. In a third FDA-posted announcement, Unilever United States Inc. said it was 'voluntarily recalling select Knorr Sopa Soup Mix products because the products may contain egg, which is not listed as an ingredient on the label.' The notice covers three 3.5 oz mixes (Estrellitas con Tomate, Fideos con Tomate and Letras con Tomate) with best-if-used-by dates prior to and including July 6, 2024, says the products were distributed nationwide and that the company had not received reports of consumer complaints or allergic reactions, and tells consumers who bought them not to consume them and to visit www.KnorrSopaRecall.com, where a refund requires a picture of the back of the product showing the UPC and best-if-used-by date.

Only fda.gov pages were searched for these notices; no other Unilever recall or regulator enforcement action was reviewed for this page, and absence from this page is not a statement that none exists. Check the FDA recalls database and CPSC for current notices.

Who Unilever is, and what changed in 2025 and 2026

Entities. Unilever PLC is the London-headquartered parent; its July 2026 Form 6-K lists 'Unilever House, Blackfriars, London, England' as the principal executive office and names Unilever United States, Inc. as a co-registrant on its U.S. registration statements. In a December 2022 court filing, Unilever United States disclosed 'Corporate Parent Unilever, PLC' (Barnette docket, Document 9).

Ice cream demerger. Unilever's investor page for the demerger lists '6 December 2025 Demerger completed' and '8 December 2025 TMICC listing and trading commenced', where TMICC is The Magnum Ice Cream Company. Unilever's 2026 first-half release reports that in April 2026 Unilever completed the sale of its 61.9 percent stake in Kwality Wall's (India) Limited and of its 55 percent stake in a Portuguese ice cream joint venture to TMICC. TMICC is a separately listed company. Unilever's July 2026 Form 6-K says: 'Unilever retained a 19.85 % stake in TMICC, which has been recognised as an equity investment' (carried at EUR 1,852 million at 30 June 2026, per the same filing); a March 2026 TMICC prospectus supplement registers resale of up to 121,604,413 TMICC ordinary shares by Unilever selling securityholders. An archive complaint from 2011 about a Magnum bar named Unilever's customer service.

Foods and McCormick. The same release says: 'In March 2026, we announced an agreement to combine Unilever's Foods business with McCormick' and 'We expect completion by mid-2027 at the latest, subject to McCormick shareholder approval, receipt of required regulatory approvals and the satisfaction of other customary closing conditions.' Until a transaction closes, brands in the Foods group such as Knorr and Hellmann's remain part of Unilever according to the company; check the brand's own site for the current responsible company.

Scale. For the first half of 2026 Unilever reported turnover of EUR 25.6 billion with four business groups: Beauty & Wellbeing, Personal Care, Home Care and Foods (company figures).

What the record shows (BBB and our archive)

BBB, as displayed on 2026-10-16. The BBB file 'Unilever Consumer Services' (800 Sylvan Ave, Englewood Cliffs, NJ) is not BBB accredited, shows a BBB rating of A-, and gives as the reason 'Failure to respond to 3 complaint(s) filed against business'. Its complaints tab shows 37 total complaints in the last 3 years and 12 filed in the last 12 months. BBB's page states that this profile 'includes complaints for Unilever Consumer Services's headquarters and its corporate-owned locations'. These figures describe that one BBB file only; other BBB files with the Unilever name exist for other locations and are not added in.

Trustpilot, as displayed on 2026-10-16. The Trustpilot page for unilever.com is an unclaimed profile showing 255 reviews and a TrustScore of 1.4. The reviews visible on it concern products from several countries, so it is not a U.S.-specific figure, and it is kept separate from the BBB numbers.

Our archive. We link 9 consumer complaints to Unilever and its brands, posted between 2006 and 2013. They concern, in the writers' words, a cotton-swab brand's quality (Q-tips), a laundry detergent that left residue in a washer, laundry products said to have damaged clothing, ice cream container sizes, a candy-bar-style ice cream with a foreign object, an unreceived promotional T-shirt and a damaged-foot injury claim for a body-lotion bottle, a television advertisement, and a skin reaction to soap. Each is one customer's account and is unverified by us; the company's response, where the writer reports one, is only as the writer describes it. These posts describe the brand owner as of their dates.

Consumer lawsuits against Unilever United States (docket-level facts only)

Dry shampoo benzene class action, D. Conn. Little et al. v. Unilever United States, Inc., No. 3:22-cv-01189, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut on September 21, 2022 (Judge Michael P. Shea; nature of suit 370 Other Fraud; jury demand by plaintiffs). The defendants named in the operative consolidated complaint are Unilever United States, Inc., Aeropres Corporation and Voyant Beauty, LLC (caption of ECF 212). Docket steps read on 2026-10-16: on February 20, 2025 pending motions were denied without prejudice after the parties' notice of settlement (ECF 192); plaintiffs' May 2025 memorandum (ECF 199) described a proposed non-reversionary settlement fund of $3,625,000 from the defendants; on February 17, 2026 the court denied the unopposed motion for preliminary approval of the class settlement without prejudice (ECF 212), writing that it could not approve the proposed class because, 'as defined, it is impermissibly broad'; on June 24, 2026 the court dismissed the claims of the named plaintiffs it had found lacked standing, denied leave to file an amended complaint, allowed the defendants to renew their Rule 12(b)(6) motion against plaintiff Billie Barnette by July 15, 2026, and set plaintiffs' class-certification motion for February 19, 2027 (ECF 231). The docket then lists renewed motions to dismiss and a motion to strike filed on July 27, 2026, briefing through September 23, 2026, and an order on the motion to strike on September 30, 2026 whose text we did not read. No settlement has been approved, and nothing here is a finding for or against either side.

Related Florida action transferred. Barnette v. Unilever United States, Inc., No. 3:22-cv-01236, was filed in the Middle District of Florida on November 9, 2022; on December 27, 2022 it was transferred to the District of Connecticut and opened there as No. 3:22-cv-01649. ECF 212 describes the Connecticut court staying the lead case 'to allow similar actions to be transferred to this Court' and consolidating them, and identifies Billie Barnette as the plaintiff whose standing the court found sufficient to represent a settlement class. Unilever's Florida filings in that docket attached the Little complaint, and the plaintiffs moved to intervene before the transfer order. The Justia docket page opened shows entries only through December 29, 2022.

These are allegations. Unilever's dry shampoo recall notice (above) says no adverse event reports had been received and that a health hazard evaluation did not expect adverse health consequences at the detected levels.
