GEICO claims, cancellations and complaints: what GEICO's own pages say

The routes below come from GEICO's own website. Policy terms, deadlines and rules differ by state; your policy documents and notices govern, and state insurance law applies to claims, cancellations and rates. Your policy is issued by one of several GEICO insurance companies, named on your declarations page.

Report or track a claim. GEICO's Claims Center sets out four steps: report the incident, upload photos and documents when asked, choose a repair shop, and track the claim until it is closed. GEICO says not every claim needs repairs or a physical inspection and that some vehicles can be assessed digitally. Claims can be reported online or in the GEICO mobile app, and GEICO Claims Express gives access to auto, motorcycle and RV claims. For help by phone, the Claims Center lists (800) 841-3000. Write down your claim number and the name of every adjuster you speak with.

If you disagree with a total-loss offer. Ask the adjuster in writing for the valuation report behind the offer, including the comparable vehicles used and any condition adjustments, and send back your own evidence, such as listings for similar vehicles near you and records of recent repairs or options. Check whether your policy has an appraisal clause; if it does, it explains how either side can ask for an independent appraisal of the amount of loss. Rules on what a total-loss payment must include differ by state: the Oregon and New Jersey actions in the regulator section involved sales tax, license and transfer fees and the rights of owners who keep the vehicle. If the offer still looks wrong, file a complaint with your state insurance department with the valuation report attached.

Cancel a policy. GEICO's cancellation page says to call (800) 841-1587 to reach a licensed agent; if the automated system answers, say "cancel insurance policy" and then "auto," and have your policy number ready. GEICO says there is no cancellation fee, but North Carolina policies may be subject to a short-rate premium calculation on cancellation. If you are switching insurers, start the new policy before the old one ends so you are never uninsured, and ask GEICO for written confirmation of the cancellation date.

Pay a bill. GEICO's FAQ lists automatic payments, online payments, the GEICO mobile app, an automated phone line at (800) 932-8872, your bank's bill-pay service and mail. If you have received a cancellation notice for non-payment, GEICO says the payment must be postmarked on or before the cancellation date printed on the notice.

If GEICO does not resolve it. File a complaint with the insurance department of the state where your policy was issued; the NAIC directory links to every state department. State regulators handle disputes about claim handling, delays and denials, cancellations and non-renewals, and premiums. Include your policy and claim numbers, the issuing GEICO company from your declarations page, a short timeline, and copies of letters, emails and estimates. If a premium was charged to a credit card in error, dispute it in writing with your card issuer: under the Fair Credit Billing Act your letter must reach the issuer within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge was sent to you, at the issuer's billing-inquiries address. Your state attorney general's consumer protection office and the BBB also accept complaints, and you can report impostors who use the GEICO name to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

GEICO's insurance companies hold certificates of authority from state insurance regulators: the Texas Department of Insurance, for example, lists eight GEICO companies authorized to write personal auto insurance in Texas, and Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Oregon regulators supervise GEICO companies in those states. The group has been owned by Berkshire Hathaway since 1996.

Being licensed does not mean a company is free of disputes. Insurance regulators in New Jersey, New York, Oregon and Texas have issued consent orders or enforcement actions against GEICO companies over cybersecurity, non-renewal and cancellation notices, total-loss payments and rating errors, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General reached an agreement with GEICO on its cancellation procedures that is expressly not an admission of wrongdoing. In several of these matters GEICO itself reported the problem or repaid customers before the order: it self-reported the Texas zero-dollar-claim rating error, repaid the Oregon total-loss underpayments with interest during the investigation, and began New Jersey refunds while the examination was still under way. The details are in the regulator section. BBB's A+ grade and GEICO's low customer-review scores on BBB and Trustpilot, given in the complaint record section, measure different things and are not combined.

Before paying a premium, check that the company named on your quote or declarations page is licensed in your state with your state insurance department; the NAIC's online directory lists every state department.

Complaint record: BBB, Trustpilot and this site's archive

The figures below come from different sources that use different methods, so they are shown separately and never added together.

BBB. The BBB profile for Geico, Chevy Chase, MD gives GEICO an A+ BBB rating; GEICO is not BBB accredited. BBB shows 2,601 complaints filed in the last 3 years, 664 of them in the last 12 months, and an average customer review score of 1.11 out of 5 from 1,120 reviews. Because of the volume, BBB says it publishes only one of every 20 complaints it receives about GEICO, so the complaint texts visible on BBB are a sample. BBB's letter grade and its customer review average measure different things: the grade reflects BBB's own assessment of the business, including how it responds to complaints, while the review average reflects what reviewers wrote. The profile also carries a government-action notice about GEICO's May 22, 2026 agreement with the Pennsylvania Attorney General, described in the regulator section below.

Trustpilot. GEICO's Trustpilot page (www.geico.com) is marked as an unclaimed profile and shows a TrustScore of 1.3 from 1,504 reviews.

This site's archive. 323 published complaint reports are linked to this profile. They are consumers' own unverified accounts, written between 2000 and 2014, and describe experiences from those years. The most common topics are claims that were denied, delayed or paid less than the policyholder expected; premium increases and quote disputes; billing errors, unexpected charges and refunds; and cancellations, non-renewals or dropped coverage. A smaller group are accounts from people who worked for GEICO. Individual accounts do not show how often a problem occurs.

Regulator orders and agreements involving GEICO companies

Each item states what the regulator's own order, list or press release says. A consent order or settlement records agreed terms; it is not a finding of wrongdoing beyond what it states.

New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, overcharges and improper practices, October 20, 2026. The department announced an enforcement action against Government Employees Insurance Company based on a market conduct examination it opened in September 2024 after consumer complaints. The examination covered Government Employees Insurance Company, GEICO Secure, GEICO Choice, GEICO Indemnity and GEICO Casualty and cited them in four areas: charging rates higher than the department had approved, cancelling policies for improper reasons, leaving required language out of notices that could lead to non-renewal, and not informing total-loss owners who kept their vehicle after settlement of their rights. According to the department, more than 15,000 policyholders were affected; GEICO is returning more than $10.5 million in premium the department says was wrongly charged, and GEICO and its affiliates were assessed a $1.2 million penalty. GEICO began issuing refunds voluntarily during the examination. The department says affected policyholders were sent a letter and received either a refund or a credit on their policy; questions about whether a policy was affected go to GEICO customer service at (800) 841-1587, and New Jersey residents can reach the department's Consumer Hotline at 1-800-446-7467.

New York DFS and Attorney General, cybersecurity penalties, November 25, 2024. According to the DFS press release, attackers targeted GEICO's online auto insurance quoting tools in a series of cyberattacks starting in November 2020 and obtained driver's license numbers and dates of birth; about 116,000 New York residents were affected. GEICO agreed to pay $9,750,000 in penalties ($4,750,000 to the Attorney General and $5 million to DFS) and to carry out a comprehensive cybersecurity risk assessment and penetration testing, with an action plan to address what they find.

New York DFS, non-renewal notices, consent order approved August 10, 2023. DFS fined Government Employees Insurance Company and GEICO General Insurance Company $40,000 because, from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2018, they failed to send personal auto policyholders the notice of intent not to renew required by New York Insurance Law Section 3425(d)(1).

Oregon Division of Financial Regulation, total-loss claims, final order INS-23-0063, August 13, 2024. Eight GEICO companies consented to a cease-and-desist order and $672,200 in civil penalties, of which $403,320 is suspended and will be waived after three years if there are no new violations. The order finds that in total-loss claims from January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2022 the group did not give the required Oregon total loss notice when offering a cash settlement in 901 claims and left out applicable taxes, license fees and transfer fees in 5,821 claims, underpaying claimants a total of $539,031.11. GEICO repaid those claimants in full, with interest, during the investigation.

Texas Department of Insurance, zero-dollar claims, order 2025-9142, February 20, 2025. In a consent order, GEICO Texas County Mutual Insurance Company self-reported that it had raised premiums on some personal auto policies because of claims that were not paid or payable, which Texas law prohibits. GEICO represented that the error affected more than 80,000 policies and that policyholders would receive more than $18 million in restitution, including interest. The order covers policies issued or renewed with effective dates from September 1, 2021 through September 19, 2024. The order finds violations of Texas Insurance Code sections 1953.051(b) and 2251.101 and required restitution with 5 percent annual interest by April 1, 2025.

Texas Department of Insurance, vehicle symbol errors, order 2026-10017, July 8, 2026. In a consent order, eight GEICO companies agreed that errors in the vehicle (VIN) symbol tables of their rate filings affected certain personal auto policies processed between February 8, 2024 and November 18, 2025 and over 13,000 Texas policyholders; GEICO represented that this was less than 1.1% of its active policyholders. The error caused both overcharges and undercharges. The companies must pay a $30,000 administrative penalty and refund each overcharged policyholder with 5 percent annual interest by check or account credit on or before November 30, 2026.

Pennsylvania Attorney General, cancellation procedures, agreement announced May 22, 2026. The agreement followed a complaint from a new West Philadelphia policyholder whose policy was cancelled after GEICO's standard 60-day review of new customers. The Attorney General's office says GEICO used a tool with artificial intelligence features to select her for review, and that she was not told her documents were insufficient and drove uninsured without realizing it. GEICO agreed to follow the Pennsylvania Insurance Department's guidance on insurers' use of AI, give new policyholders selected for review an extra week to submit documents, accept one proof of residency instead of two (including a current driver's license showing the policy address), and train customer service staff. The agreement is not an admission of a violation of law.

Delaware Department of Insurance, market conduct examination, report published August 2025. The examination of seven GEICO companies' private passenger auto business, as of December 31, 2023, found exceptions in complaint handling, underwriting and rating, and claims, and recommended additional staff training and revised termination notices. In two claims the examiners found closed without payment, the claimants received restitution once the matter was raised with the companies.

Lawsuits and settlements

Allegations in a lawsuit are claims by one side, not findings. A settlement is a compromise and, unless it says otherwise, is not an admission of liability.

Kohama v. Government Employees Insurance Company (D. Md., 8:24-cv-00743-TDC): proposed settlement, preliminarily approved. The plaintiff alleges that GEICO violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act by failing to properly investigate disputes that consumers sent through LexisNexis Risk Solutions about entries on their C.L.U.E. claims-history report that did not belong to them or anyone on their policy. Judge Theodore D. Chuang signed the preliminary approval order on July 6, 2026. Under the proposed settlement GEICO would pay a maximum of $1,650,000 to people who filed such disputes between March 13, 2022 and May 1, 2026 and meet the other criteria in the class notice. The settlement website expects payments of about $150. Class members who did not exclude themselves do not need to file a claim: a check is mailed automatically, but only after the court grants final approval and the settlement becomes final. Until January 14, 2027 class members can update their address or choose a digital payment on the website with the Notice ID and PIN from their notice. The opt-out and objection deadlines (October 20 and October 31, 2026) have passed, and the final approval hearing is set for January 14, 2027. Class counsel has asked for about $549,945 in attorneys' fees. GEICO denies the allegations.

Nichols v. GEICO General Insurance Company (W.D. Wash., 2:18-cv-01253-TL): settlement approved. The class of Washington policyholders and beneficiaries alleged that GEICO General Insurance Company limited or ended personal injury protection benefits, or denied coverage, based on its determination that the injured person had reached maximum medical improvement. In July 2026 the court granted final approval of a settlement with a gross settlement fund of $2,600,000 and dismissed the case with prejudice.

Savage and Tow v. GEICO Indemnity Company (Georgia, case no. SUCV2024000382): settlement, claim period closed. The class representatives allege that GEICO Indemnity Company breached its policies by not paying Georgia policyholders the $5 license plate registration transfer fee when settling first-party total-loss claims between September 16, 2019 and August 8, 2024; the insurers deny the allegations. The court preliminarily approved the settlement. The settlement website lists the claim deadline of August 6, 2026, the opt-out and objection deadline of July 22, 2026 and the September 9, 2026 fairness hearing as passed. Only class members who filed a claim by August 6, 2026 can receive a payment.

Willis v. GEICO and related call-center cases (M.D. Ga., 5:23-cv-430, with Benvenutti, 5:22-cv-182, and Rice, 5:23-cv-414): settlement approved. Call-center employees at GEICO's Macon, Georgia, office alleged under the Fair Labor Standards Act that they were not paid for all hours worked, including time spent starting up computers and logging into systems before they were logged into GEICO's Finesse call program and tasks done after logging out. In May 2024 the court consolidated Benvenutti with Willis. Insurance Journal reported that Judge Marc Treadwell approved a settlement on January 23, 2026 under which GEICO pays more than $900,000 plus administrative costs to almost 1,500 workers, with about $520,000 going to the plaintiffs' attorneys; GEICO denied any liability.

Who is GEICO? Companies and scale

GEICO is the consumer brand of a group of insurance companies. According to GEICO's legal notices, GEICO is a registered service mark of Government Employees Insurance Company, Washington, D.C. 20076, a Berkshire Hathaway Inc. subsidiary. GEICO's At a Glance page says the company was founded in 1936, became a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway in 1996, operates through twelve affiliated companies, employs more than 29,000 people and is the third-largest private passenger auto insurer in the United States according to A.M. Best.

Which company issued my policy? Frequently Asked Questions

How do I file or track a GEICO claim?

Report a claim online through GEICO's Claims Center or in the GEICO mobile app, then upload photos and documents when asked, choose a repair shop, and follow the claim's progress online. GEICO Claims Express gives access to auto, motorcycle and RV claims. For help by phone, call (800) 841-3000. Keep your claim number and a note of each call.

How do I cancel a GEICO policy?

Call GEICO at (800) 841-1587. If the automated system answers, say "cancel insurance policy" and then "auto," and have your policy number ready. GEICO says there is no cancellation fee, although North Carolina policies may be subject to a short-rate premium calculation. If you are switching insurers, have the new policy in force before the GEICO policy ends, and ask for written confirmation of the cancellation date.

How do I complain about GEICO to a regulator?

File a complaint with the insurance department of the state where your policy was issued; the NAIC's online directory links to every state department. State regulators handle complaints about claim handling, cancellations, non-renewals and premiums. Include your policy and claim numbers, the GEICO company named on your declarations page, a short timeline and copies of correspondence. Your state attorney general's consumer protection office also takes complaints: GEICO's May 2026 agreement with the Pennsylvania Attorney General began with a single consumer's complaint about a cancellation.

Which GEICO company issued my policy?

Look at the declarations page of your policy: it names the issuing insurer. GEICO is a service mark of Government Employees Insurance Company, but policies are written by several affiliated companies, including GEICO General Insurance Company, GEICO Indemnity Company, GEICO Casualty Company, GEICO Advantage, GEICO Choice and GEICO Secure Insurance Companies, and, in Texas, GEICO County Mutual and GEICO Texas County Mutual. Use the exact company name in any complaint to a regulator.

What did New York regulators say about GEICO's data incidents?

In November 2024 New York's Department of Financial Services and Attorney General announced that GEICO would pay $9,750,000 in penalties over a series of cyberattacks on its online auto insurance quoting tools that began in November 2020. Attackers obtained driver's license numbers and dates of birth of about 116,000 New York residents. GEICO also agreed to a comprehensive cybersecurity risk assessment and penetration testing. Anyone whose driver's license number was exposed can report identity theft and get a recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov.

What were the Texas GEICO orders about?

Order 2025-9142 of February 20, 2025 concerned GEICO Texas County Mutual raising premiums because of claims that were not paid or payable; GEICO represented that more than 80,000 policies were affected and more than $18 million in restitution, including interest, would be paid. Order 2026-10017 of July 8, 2026 concerned errors in vehicle symbol tables in eight GEICO companies' rate filings that affected over 13,000 Texas policyholders; the companies must pay a $30,000 penalty and refund overcharged policyholders with 5 percent interest by November 30, 2026.

Is there a GEICO class action settlement affecting me?

The pending Kohama settlement covers people who disputed C.L.U.E. claims-history entries that GEICO had reported, through LexisNexis Risk Solutions, between March 13, 2022 and May 1, 2026 and who meet the other criteria in the class notice. Payments of about $150 are expected and need no claim form, but they are made only if the court grants final approval at or after the January 14, 2027 hearing. Until that date class members can update their address or choose a digital payment on kohama2026settlement.com with the Notice ID and PIN from their notice. The Washington Nichols settlement has already received final approval, and the claim deadline in the Georgia Savage total-loss settlement has passed; details are in the lawsuits section.

What do BBB and Trustpilot show for GEICO?

BBB gives GEICO an A+ rating; GEICO is not BBB accredited. BBB shows 2,601 complaints in the last 3 years, 664 of them in the last 12 months, and an average customer review score of 1.11 out of 5 from 1,120 reviews. Trustpilot shows a TrustScore of 1.3 from 1,504 reviews on an unclaimed profile. The two sources measure different things and are not combined.

What does this site's GEICO archive contain?

323 published complaint reports are linked to this profile. They are consumers' own unverified accounts written between 2000 and 2014, mostly about claim payments, premium increases, billing and cancellations. They predate the 2023 to 2026 regulator orders described on this page.
