Murdock Hyundai Buyer Beware Internet

Daughter purchased a Hyundai Tiburon last July. 6 months later tried to sell/trade in at another dealership. Was told by other dealer that car had "branded" title and was worth less than half the price she paid for it. She then called Murdock. Took 5 days for response, at which time Ben Murdock called daughter and told her they had copy of document she signed acknowledging the vehicle was sold as is and offers her approximately half the price she paid. She had asked for a faxed copy of said document during conversations with other dealership personnel that week - no joy.

We began conversations with attorney under the premise of Utah law preventing sale of branded/salvage title vehicles without disclosure. Blake Murdock calls daughter one week later, identifies himself as the owner of Murdock, and proceeds to tell he about how dealerships have to make money and that if she pursues it further, she will have to talk to Murdock's attorney. I personally consider this bullying. She gave him the number of the attorney she had contacted and apparently he called said attorney.
Upon receipt of the letter from my daughter's attorney the next week, Murdock's attorney produced a document my 19 year old daughter signed acknowledging that the vehicle she was sold was a "manufacturer's or dealer buyback", apparently having had maintenance/warranty issues rendering such action by the manufacturer/dealer.

Bottom line. Murdock Hyundai in Logan sold a vehicle to a 19 year old university student and her just returned from duty Afghanistan combat veteran boyfriend that was worth approximately half of what she paid for it. Although the sales person disclosed that the vehicle was a buyback, there was no mention of how it would affect the vehicle's worth substantially, this being confirmed when Ben Murdock offered her approximately half of what she paid for it merely 6 months previous.

The owner (s) of Murdock Auto Group were given an opportunity to offer a solution to this issue and chose to create a reputation that which renders them a business neither I, 'nor my circle of influence will patronize.

My daughter has leaned an expensive lesson as to how even large and supposedly "reputable" auto dealerships conduct business in a apparently legal, yet (what I view to be) predatory, dishonest and unethical manner. The returned combat soldier is somewhat discouraged knowing he is laying his life on the line so The Murdock Auto Group has the freedom to conduct business in this manner.

I and my/our circle of influence will be recommending to our friends and associates that they conduct their auto business elsewhere.

Buyer Beware
