My brake light was on so I took my car into Break Check to have the "free inspection" done. They took my car apart and said I had no break fluid and there was a leak in my master clyinder and that it would need replaced. I asked how much that would be and he first quoted me $420 and then said he would look for a remanufactured part. He did and said he found one and my car would also need a fluid flush so it would be $380 tax.
I said I needed to go and would have to come back. He said they already had the car apart and it was not safe to drive. I said, I can't do it today I'll have to come back. They had me sign a form saying the car was unsafe to drive. Being that I'm very tall and thin and driving a red mustang convertible - I was pretty sure I was being taken advantage of.
So I called up a car care center that had been referred to me and took my car there. I told them the diagnosis from Brake Check. They called when my car was ready and said it would be $72 with the state inspection as well. I said "What?" They said the hose going to the master clyinder was loose so that is why it leaked and air got into the master clyinder. They tightened up my brake lines, filled the brake fluid did the state inspection (which brake check said wouldn't pass) and said I was good to go. I asked why break check would have charged me over $400 and he said I don't know, but we are honest.
Pretty Lady - ripped off by uneducated Brake Check technicians!
