I've a unfortunate member of Higher One, forced to take the account by the North Carolina college system. My current experience after 3 days of having the account is a $2.50 fee which is not listed on their schedule and a 50 cent fee for a online credit transaction.
To snare more people the company makes it nearly impossible to use the card as a "credit" transaction. This is the only method to avoid a fee when using the card. I don't understand their reasoning for not allowing this as they charge the company with the machine an enormous fee as well.
I'm warning anyone forced to take this scam service by your state education system to immediately do everything you can to leave this company without paying them a dime. I knew the warnings going in but even doing things the company claims you can do for free, I was still charged.
Currently I plan to withdraw $500 a day from their ATM's, then I'll attempt to dwindle every cent from the account and if possible close it until next semester to avoid being forced to pay yet another "inactivity fee".
