Well, I guess I can now be added to the growing list of those who have been harassed by CAMCO. Overall, my story mimics all of the other reports filed here, so I won't bore you with all the details, except to say that at one point, when talking to CAMCO, they actually said I needed to "step up to the plate" and pay my bills, a comment I believe others have said has been used before. You'd think with all the money these scam artists are tricking innocent people into giving up, they could at least get some new lines to scare us with.
Anyway, I filed this report mainly to tell people some info I found on the internet on statue of limitations, and what CAMCO can and can't do. Well firstly, as has been stated before, each state has their own statue of limitations law applying to this sort of thing, and the easiest way to find out yours is to just search the internet. As is the case with all of the people CAMCO tries to collect on, the debt will probably be well past your states limitations. Now, for the technical part. While the statue of limitations prevents the company who is owed the debt from sueing you, is DOES NOT mean they must stop calling you and asking for the money.
Technically, a company could call you forever asking for the debt if they truly wished too. So, does this mean CAMCO can continue to hound all of us. Well, while the law says that the original creditor can ask for the debt as long as they wish, third parties, which CAMCO is as it bought the debt from some original creditor (they usually even tell you this), are NOT allowed this same right, and if you get a cease and desist, the company must stop contact on the matter (except for once more, only to alert you they have receieved the cease and desist and will not bother you again).
Well, I hope all this helps any out there still shaky on the law. Also, people can feel free to post additional information here. I'm not going to pretend like I know everything about the law, mostly becuase I don't. Also, in closing, to any people out there who may have been scared by CAMCO or, even worse, gave them any information, don't let anyone push you around over the telephone.
Furthermore, do not give out any personal information over the phone, regardless who the company says. If it truly is a bank and you really do owe them some money, they will come to you in person and request this sort of thing, or at least give you more information about the debts than CAMCO.
