Complaint / Review
National City Bank
Took Payments not posted to account (s)

In a government sponsored moved from Columbus, OH I asked my realtor what banks she might suggest that I get a mortgage with; after a number of phone calls I received information from three or four mortgage lenders/banks in Cleveland.

I decided on National City as they could service my mortage, MC/Visa card and had online banking. We picked out a house in Lakewood, OH and proceeded with the mortage with National City. I transferred current funds from a credit union to National City to open a checking account, savings account, credit card, mortgage and a debit card. My mortage counseler (Scott Gaskins) ASSURED me that I would be able to make bi-weekly payments.

When I opened the account, in Columbus, Amy Searies, an assistant manager of the branch I was working with, showed me how to make out the bi-weekly payment slips, where to send them, amounts, etc. I also received from her my debit card and also the applied for credit card. So, now I have all my banking services with National City and I am off to Cleveland.

My first troubles began when I began using my debit card: I used it for EVERYTHING: groceries, gas, entertainment, buying off the internet: you name it. However, my third day there, while shopping for groceries, my debit card was declined. I could not understand, as I had transferred over $ 10,000.00 into my checking account at National City two weeks earlier; there was no way the card could be declined with that kind of balance.

I called National City from my cell phone while standing in the store line (luckily I had my briefcase with all my banking information) and asked to speak to one of the persons I had dealt with before. I finally spoke to someone, don't remember the name, and she advised that my debit card limit was set at $100.00 per day for the first six months as I was a new account holder.

I asked her to check my balance in my account; she said that there was over $ 12,000.00 in the account. I ask her how in the he-l could they put a limit of $ 100.00 a day on my card when my entertainment bill for an evening out could well, as usually was, over $ 100.00!!! I asked to speak to a manager and they agreed over the phone to raise the limit to $300.00 per day.

Then came the online banking. I was looking at my deposits to my mortage and comparing them with my checking account; the deposits were made to my mortgage up to two weeks AFTER the checks had cleared. After many letters and phone calls I finally refinanced (at a lower rate) with my local credit union.

To top everything else off, I was so mad at getting my final bill for my charge card, that I overpaid $ 13.95 (or so) and have the last statement indicating a credit balance. That has been about two years ago. Do you think that National City has offered to refund the overpayment? Not on you life.

I keep getting information from National City for loans, checking, etc. I kept on returning them with letters/notes to be opted OUT of their mailings. I finally wrote a 'nasty' one to the Chairman of the Board, with copies of the previous requests to be taken of their mailing list. I have not received anything for a couple of months now, so hopefully, I am finished with that non-service bank. Don't under ANY circumstances, attempt to have any busines doings with National City Bank or their Mortgage Company. You will be sorry that you did.
