Attemping to collect on an invalid debt

My husband took out a $4,000 secured credit card with Bank of America in early 2006. We used a good bit of the balance, but kept up with the monthly minimum payments. We moved out of state in late 2006 and had to max the card out to pay off some unexpected moving expenses. We made the minimum payments until June until I was laid off work. My husband called Bank of America and the credit card was cancelled. Since it was a secured card, the balance was paid off by the $4,000 we initially put down on the card. We never heard anything else from Bank of America about the card.

We've moved again since then and our cell phone numbers were just recently changed. These numbers are not listed anywhere and only friends/family have them. My husband recently received a phone call (around 8:30 P.M.) from a representative from Plaza Associates stating that he owes almost $700 on this account! He proceeded to tell the representative that this was a secured credit card and the account was paid off and closed back in 2007. He told the lady that we would contact Bank of America directly to inquire about the account.

We just happened to be at my parents' house and less than 3 minutes later their phone rang. It was the exact same representative my husband had just talked to. He told her that this was not his phone number and to remove it from her call list immediately. She stated that it is her job to inform our family and friends that we owe a debt to her company and for them to make sure we pay it. Excuse me?!?

We contacted Bank of America and they are not showing any open or delinquent accounts from either my husband or myself.

Another representative from Plaza Associates called my husband yesterday afternoon during lunch and told him that we had to pay their settlement before 5 P.M. EST today or else the account would be referred to their law firm and he would be taken to court. He told them that the account had been paid off with a $0 balance in 2007 and we did not owe anyone a dime for this card. The representative said they purchased a "valid debt" and we WOULD pay them or my husband would be sued. We offered to send in a statement from Bank of America saying the account had been closed with a $0 balance and the twit said they wouldn't accept it.

Where do we go from here?
