Outragous over draft fees

This is the second time this has happened to me. Today I went to deposit 500 dollars and found out i was over drafted by 40 dollars and it cost me 230 dollars. I dont know how that works. About a month ago same thing over by a couple of dollars and it cost me 340 dollars. How is this legal.
