We recently discovered this website and began reading about the J.K. Harris Company. We too have been ripped off and still no resolution to our problem.
In December 200l we met with a representative of JK Harris at an office in Lexington, KY which they used periodically to meet with potential customers and grab their money. We were told that we qualified for an offer in compromise and began to collect the necessary information to begin the process.information was submitted and we waited months for the OIC to be submitted to the IRS. After countless calls to their office we would learn that "your file has been forwarded to so and so", the person who had it before is no longer with us.
In August we sent what we thought was the final information and a signed copy of the paperwork to be sent to the IRS for their consideration. We continued to call periodically, only to receive no return phone calls or any information.
Finally, one day I was lucky enough to get to talk to a Mr. Samuel Trotter who told me that we did not qualify for an Offer in Compromise. Believe me, we were so mad because after three years or so of doing all the work and sending information in, the only thing we had gotten was double the amount in taxes and penalties/interest than we had started with. We also got a federal tax lien filed on our property and my husband's disability retirement check held until we could beg the IRS to take a small amount each month instead of the entire check.
From this point on we started filing our own Offer in Compromise which was quite simple and had we known from the beginning we would never had signed with JK Harris to do the work for us. Now in January we are trying to work out an installment agreement to make monthly payments.
We also asked for a refund of all or a portion of the original $2000 we paid them only to be refused. Personally it makes us sick to see Mr. J.K. Harris appear on the FOX News Channel and make his company out to be lifesavers for people like us who are both retired on small disability incomes. We are also considering making this information available to Mr. Bill O'Reilly on Fox News Channel since he says he's "looking out for you" and his program is known as the "no spin zone."
